“The area was used for target practice during the Second World War.”
Yeah, right! Who was supposedly wasting time, gas and ordnance dropping live bombs for 'practice' during the war?

Ummm, training?
It is also not beyond belief that an Allied bomb landed on an area the Germans used for target practice. We missed things. A lot.

Or jettisoned by a wounded plane. Or practice just after the war, during occupation. Or German artillary shell during their practice, or....
Reporters are no longer concernedd with accuracy - just flipping something out there for publication.

Probably more than a few damaged planes, dumping bombs, trying to lighten the load to return home.

The son of a good friend of mine is in a National Guard bomb unit and has been to Afghanistan and Iraq on several deployments. They train before missions in Germany clearing areas around current and former military bases that still have left over mines. One trip they were clearing a boobytrapped field that the Nazis had rigged during the War. It turned out to be a lot more complex and powerful that they thought, and part of it detonated under his mine sweeping vehicle. My friend's son and one of his buddies were injured with broken bones, and laid up a while, but recovered eventually. They actually studied the boobytrap afterward because it was ingenious in design. I asked him if he was going to get his WW2 Purple Heart for being wounded by enemy actions! It amazes me that it could still work after being in the ground for 70 years.

I don't see why he shouldn't get that PH. What a story to tell at parties, kids, grandkids: " Yeah, I got this from WWII!"

I recall reading an article some time ago about ordinance disposal units somewhere in Europe, I believe France, that spend the bulk of their time dealing with WWII and older ordnance, much of it unearthed by farmers or construction crews. Farmers will find shells in their fields and call in the crews to deal with them. There are thousands of tons of unexploded ordanance out there that still pose a serious threat.

My first thought was jettisoned by a crippled B-17 or Lancaster. Glad nobody was hurt other then some corn plants. I never heard of a chemical fuse. Wonder how they worked. A while back I read an article concerning salvaging projectiles from Civil War Gunboats from a river in Ga or SC. It was a drawn out process involving drilling into the shell and putting in chemicals to neutralize the powder. I also read somewhere that in 1983 lightning stuck a tree on Culp's Hill (Gettysburg), exploring a shell lodged there since 1863! 7mm

Back when there was still a Clark AB in the Philippines, a guy on the base golf course took a swing at his ball in the undergrowth and set off a Japanese bomb. Killed him, of course.
