There was one of those in the area for an air show a few years ago.
As he left (BNA?), he came over the house some 30 miles away.
I heard that sucker some distance off and was outside to see/hear him pass over.
I can not imagine how loud a bunch of them were in WWII, if one was that loud.

I flew over the Pacific to my overseas assignment on a chartered C-54. What I remember is that they had unattractive stewardesses before they became legally required. She got our attention when she explained the shark repellent during the briefing. Shark repellent? WTF?

Also, the refueling stop at Wake Island, and the plane hanging its tail off the end of the short runway with the pilot gunning the engines with the brakes locked.
