I was watching a Youtube video yesterday where the pistol trainer highly recommended this Winchester 9mm pistol ammo for self defense. I have no experience with it. If you know something about this loading, please tell me about it.

Thanks, RS

You can check out the gelatin block performance here. Looks like it performs about the same as the PDX.

Lucky Gunner 9mm tests

I like the Federal HST 124 gr. or 147 gr.; whichever shoots closest to POA.

Good luck getting any as winchester limits the sale of the ranger line of ammo to law enforcement only and from what im told actually enforces the restriction. All online sites ive seen it on require credentials to buy it.

Rip take this for what its worth. I worked for a very large police dept. for almost 30 years. We shot Winchester exclusively. I retired 15 years ago and have been shooting various brands of .38, 9mm, 40 S&W, and 357 sig. ammo. Due to ever increasing liability for the CCW community I decided to call the pistol range and ask what the officers were issues. I was told by one of the range officers that they have been having a lot of issues with the Winchester ammo, FTF-FTE so the Dept has now changed to Hornady Critical Duty 135gr +P in their 9mm pistols. I will check back with the Dept form time to time for and updated changes.

Blessings,

Jim

Highly reputed as one on a short list of the best 9mm rounds in terms of stopping power.

Bought a bunch of it from Lucky Gunner. No one asked if I was law enforcement.

I prefer shooting the bulls tests over lucky Gunner

https://youtu.be/6UP7p3fxgzE

The HST 147 and 124 are also excellent

https://youtu.be/K3VfWkWMzOI

The ranger penetrates slightly more with slightly less expansion from what I've seen

Additionally, the LEO rule typically applies to buying boxes of 50 as Some places won't sell HST box of 50 to non LEO

The ones I bought from Lucky Gunner were 50 count boxes.

I have bought many thousands of rounds of Ranger ammo. I was never asked for any LEO id. Never had those problems with the ammo. I've got and shot a schitload of it..

Wasn't this what Black Talon was called after the black polymer coating was removed? More precisely, Ranger STX? If so, I have shot a buch and still have a couple boxes of the 135 gr HPs that I used when I had 40 S&W compacts. I have bought this from several online sources with CDNN Investments being the latest. I have also bought it from two police supply houses with none of the establishments asking for anything other than proof of age.

I have not shot the bonded version that I know, at least not any that I paid for. The Ranger worked well to put down a couple of car hit deer and I can't imagine the bonded would do any worse. I have not heard of any issues with the ammo but there seems to always be a lot or two from someone on recall at various times. I would buy some if I were in the market and/or the price was right.

Have any of these purchases been recently? Heard that Winchester had cracked down on non-leo sales with "offending" sellers losing the ability to receive any "restricted" ammo from them.

Just called a buddy of mine who works for a large firearm related wholesaler. He told me that certain distributors have contracts with winchester stating they can only sell leo marked ammo to credentialed buyers. He also stated that in particular Winchester is pushing this and the number of places allowed to sell it to anyone is alot less then in the past with alot less inventory, basically the wholesalers with contracts get majority of ammo marked LEO, hence the lack of online and instore inventory available for public purchase. He also said federal is doing some of this as well but more so that the price of the 50rd LEO marked boxes sold to public is priced higher recently---basically around the price of 2 20rd boxes of non leo marked.

Winchester Ranger T series is the so-called "Law Enforcement" ammo.

Similar performance can be had with Gold Dot and Federal HST "duty" ammunition or the 20 round "Personal Defense" offerings.

The "bonded" Winchester is NOT in the same class.
