The ambulance was left running, and unattended, in front of a psychiatric hospital. What could possibly go wrong? Man steals ambulance, goes to KFC for some chicken ‘He said he needed a ride’ By Ed Payne | July 25, 2019 at 11:02 AM CDT - Updated July 25 at 11:02 AM
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK/CNN) – All he wanted was some KFC, a smoke and maybe a few munchies.
But he didn’t have a car, so he stole an ambulance early Thursday from in front of a psychiatric hospital where he had been a patient and hit the road.
It was an easy get. The keys were in the ambulance and it was already running, authorities said.
After picking up his chicken, he headed for a gas station, where a Harris County Sheriff’s deputy caught up with him.
“I rolled up on him, opened the door, asked him why he had the ambulance. He said he needed a ride,” according to Lt. Lynwood Moreau. “He backed out, put his hands behind him and I handcuffed him.”
The man is in jail, charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

If you knew how many "underprivileged" citizens call ambulances to get rides to hospitals, at which time they walk out against medical advice because secretly the ambulance ride was just a ride to get to a different part of town...
In many cases, there's another car waiting for them in the parking lot...

Happens all the time here. Seeing an ambulance go speeding out of town to the northwest, people say "Someone else needs a ride to town from the Fort".

In many cases, there's another car waiting for them in the parking lot... Ran EMS 15 years. 90 miles round trip to the hospital and back. 2.5 hours for average run. Regularly had single welfare mom's with a "sick baby" needing to go to the hospital up in the city. Pull up, momma holding a squalling baby and got her suitcase packed. As soon as 6ft tall, bald, ugly, stranger picks up the baby and gets it strapped in, baby calms down, all the fussing stops, and everything is fine for next 45 minutes. Unload at the hospital. Mom and baby are scooting out the ER door into the boyfriend's car in the parking lot before we even get STARTED on paper work... Minimum charge for an ambulance at that time was $500 per run... Outta taxpayers pockets... One of the reasons I left EMS service was our county magistrates instituted a "They call, you haul" policy because they got tired of listening to all of the welfare recipients whine when we refused to haul their sorry butts to the hospital for non emergent issues.
