Probably too small a sample to appease the fussy, but I've shot several Marlin 39s over the past 35 years and all were very accurate, including the one I finally bought for myself.

Of the several people I know that have 9422 Winchesters, I can think of only one that ever boasted much about how accurate it was and his opinions have never held much sway with me anyway.

Huntin' bud bought a new Browning about 20 years ago. Beautiful rifle, don't group worth a rat's ass, never did. He bought one of his kids a M39 some years back. According to the kid, dad used to sneak the Marlin out every chance he got, while the Browning stayed in the house. ;O)

The Marlin seems to be the winner by popular vote.
Have never owned one. Maybe I need to buy one to compare.
Do these have the micro-groove barrels?
How many rounds do you have through them?
Also, were they ever made in a "trapper" model?
Thanks!

Come on guys!
Give me some feed-back. Convince me I NEED a Marlin to go with my Winchesters! (grin!)
From my research the micro-groove barrel started about 1955, and the cross-button saifty started about 1985. Is this close?
How 'bout wear on the micro-groove? Will it hold up for a lifetime of shooting?
Might have to start looking around for an older gun.(at least pre-saifty button)
Thanks! Virgil B.

OK,
Anybody know of a 39A or Mountie (20" barrel) for sale, for a reasonable price in Oregon?
Have $400. "burning a hole in my pocket" and am wanting to "invest" in a quality 22. (grin!)
It needs to be pre-saifty.
Thanks, Virgil B.

WaaaaHooooo!
I found my Marlin Mountie yesterday, in Salem Or., 'bout an hours drive from me.
Got a pre saifty button, but no gas port.
$335. out the door.
First 5 shot group was just over 5/8" at 30 yards. Better than I thought I could do with open sights.
Gotta try more ammo. This was with Rem. H.P.'s
My first impressons, Yep! I like my Marlin better than my Winchester!

Congrats Virgil.

You made an excellent choice! In regard to your question about the micro-grove rifling - my 39 was made in the mid 50's and is a microgrove. I have no idea how many rounds have been fired through this rifle. I can tell you it will still outshoot the vast majority of shooters. No sign of wear that I can tell.

Could anyone give me a date of manufacture on my "new" rifle?
It's a 39A Golden Mountie # S 233XX
My gun digests list it in 1974 but not '75
This rifle must be older than I thought!
Thanks! Virgil B.

The design is the 1894 lever action 94-22 is the caliber. The 22's are the only ones so marked, the centerfires are just 94's.

No comparison between the rimfire WMR & the centerfire Hornet.

I have shot quite a few lever action 22's, the winchester 9422 was a excellent shooting lever gun, i would have to pick a Henry H001, very accurate, nice walnut stocks, glassy smooth action , and awesome company and customer service

I'm partial to the BL-22 for its short throw and nice action.
