The founders of New California took an early step toward statehood Monday with the reading of their own Declaration of Independence from California, a state they describe as "ungovernable."

Their solution: Take over most of current-day California — including many rural counties — and leave the coastal urban areas to themselves.

"The current state of California has become governed by a tyranny," the group, led in part by vice chairman Robert Paul Preston, declared in a document published online.

The split would look something like this, per the group:

"After years of over taxation, regulation, and mono-party politics the State of California and many of it’s 58 Counties have become ungovernable," the group said in a statement, citing a "decline in essential basic services" including education, law enforcement, infrastructure and health care.

The group, organized with a council of county representatives and various committees, hopes to model their split after the state of West Virginia. That's according to CBS, whose Sacramento affiliate filmed the reading in a sparsely filled conference room.

Claiming the authority of Article 4, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution, the aspiring 51st state plans to convince California's Legislature to split the state before submitting the resolution to Congress.

The effort remains, to be clear, a long shot.

A California venture capitalist named Tim Draper sought in 2014 to split the Golden State into six parts, including the "State of Silicon Valley." It failed to make the ballot.

New California's work with regular California's state Legislature won't likely start in earnest until later this year or early next year, organizers told CBS.

“We have to demonstrate that we can govern ourselves before we are allowed to govern,” Tom Reed, a founder, told the network.

See the report at CBS 13.

Unlikely. You think the socialist politicians of this state are going to willingly give up all those electoral votes that California brings to the table?

No way, not without a fight.

And it's not called 'New California' anyway. It's Jefferson, and it's a pipe dream.

Guaranteed our county would vote for the split.

But, as Morewood points out, it's highly unlikely to happen any time soon.

Cali might try to secede from the Union first and become their own nation.

As many Mexicans and especially illegal ones....

They may get a ballot and a vote to sucede from the USA and rejoin Mexico....

they are certainly getting enough Mexicans to make that happen....

instead of the State of Jefferson, I'd like to see the Federal Government make a new state, consisting of the Bay Area, Los Angeles County, Potlandia and SeaAddle into to one state .. kinda like in those Snake Bliskin Movies....and the rest of the West Coast counties can return to living in a sane and stable country....

Got the same thought process going on up here in Washington. Everything east of the lake would be called Cascade. That would leave the liberal pukes all to themselves.

The liberals would just make it their mission to move in and take over everything from the city council, school board, police chief, county commissioner, dog catcher, you name it then they'd have some more electoral votes.

That might now be entirely true. if this was organized by republicans it might just be a good thing. for all Californians that are tired of the situation there. But i doubt its a Republican thing. They are not that smart and crafty.

That sounds good to me too. What we need is a string of brutally cold winters to run out all but the hardiest riff-raff.

Do not confuse the state of Jefferson movement with the current "New California". Jefferson is, and always was about rural VS urban. The last few proposals for splitting California are all about creating a perfect business climate for the tech industry, a safe harbor to operate international internet conglomerates. We are talking about money with more zeros behind it than fingers on your hand. Jefferson State is a bunch of ignorant [bleep] like myself who want Sacramento and Salem clear out of our lives. No hidden agenda, no Mark Zuckerburgs.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

What we see in California is what the country would be without the electoral college. Ziggy Rainbow and little miss Moonbeam would call the shots. The enemy is INSIDE the wire!!!

The reason it's not going to happen is Cali's economy is bigger than most countries'. A lot of that is due to things like ag and oil. Even much of the tourism is in the country as opposed the the cities. If they let that go they are doomed. Abe Lincoln wouldn't let the South go due to the money down there to be made off of taxes and tariffs. In his words, "who would pay for the government?". The pogues in the city ain't gonna let the goose that laid the golden egg go.
