I have the opportunity to trade into a Colt SAA. New, .45 4 3/4" barrel blued. I've wanted one since I was a kid. Never wanted to drop the cash on one, but like I said I can trade into it. I keep trying to justify it though, I could sell the guns I'm trading. Should I get it? Are they really worth it?

When it was made-- the 'generation'-- makes a difference in value, as does, of course condition, what's with it, etc.

As long as you don't over pay for it, they are like holding gold. You will never lose your money, and you get to enjoy the ownership while holding it.

Yes, as someone mentioned, the "generation" is crucial when determining correct price. There were three generations, and also dates within generations are crucial in determining correct price. Research this before buying. It will take less than an hour to learn all you need to know about generations and dates within them.

The answer is... ONCE!
Get the Colt.
Don't even hesitate.
The Colt SAA are a rather good investment of one's monies these days - you would NOT be loosing much at all if anything should you decide to "unload" it.
Good luck whichever route you choose.

I have no useful comment regarding your particular trading opportunity but if you want a SAA, it will only cost you more later ... generally speaking. Ask the guys that bought Pythons when they were $1200 .... people thought they were crazy.

I think the going price on a new one is north of 2000, so that is a good deal in my opinion.
I am not an expert, but i guess 1980's 3 generations are not so desirable as other 3rd gens.
If I were in your shoes, I would do it. Personally I like the 4 3/4 barrel length in 45 the best. I have a USFA in that configuration, and it is really smooth to shoot.

Nothing wrong with 3rd Gen. Very nice guns. There are dates that are better liked than others within 3ed Gen, so you might want to look into it. But that price seems about right. You won't lose anything at that price if you ever want to resell it.

I got $1,800 for my Python. I paid like $600.00 for it used, before the prices went crazy.

Depends on when during 3rd generation production it was made. If it was made in the last 10yrs, it is a measurably better gun than any other 3rd generation. Some of the early 3rd's can be particularly undesirable. Rest assured, regardless of vintage, it's going to have oversized throats.

Do it. Colts only increase in value.

$1,799 is a good price for this gun.
