My youngest son has been pursuing his first deer this week during early youth season. We have had HOT weather and uncountable MOSQUITOs to deal with. After a few stalks that did not get us as close as I thought necessary in the evenings, we finally caught a break in the weather this morning before church. A bit foggy and around 50F to start the morning. After walking past one doe and then spooking her on our return walk in a large field of grass, we decided to sneak our way down a tree row toward the other end of the field. We spotted a doe and fawn way out in the middle of the grass field still feeding in a depression. After stalking, I decided we were not close enough for my comfort, so we crawled on hands and knees for about 75 yards to close the distance. We set up the shooting sticks and he got on the deer. He shot once, I told him that he had missed and we watched as the doe ran away all the way across the field. I told him it was alright and not to worry about it. He insisted that he had seen the deer drop in the scope at the shot. It had not dawned on me that he wasn't aiming at the larger doe. I thought that he was shooting at the big doe but instead he had honed in upon the smaller fawn. We walked the 125 yards to where he had shot the smaller fawn. It was a perfect base of the neck, high shoulder/spine shot. Federal blue box 223/64 grain softpoint. Entrance on neck, broke top of both shoulders/spine, exited at about quarter size. The gun is a little project we have been working on over the summer. We dyed his stocks, grip, and magazine blue; and braided a blue sling out of spare baler twine. He likes it and shoots it well. I forgot my phone so the pics are from when we got home. First deer!

Excellent. Congrats to you and your son. It brings back memories of both my daughters' first deer, each at 8 years old. Keep him hunting as it is the best pure entertainment and our best chance of continuing the sport we enjoy.

Nice story and I like seeing kids with their deer in youth hunt. They are all trophies to them. He will shoot many more deer . I am amazed how well that .223 kills deer.
