Zebralight H600 with 18650 batteries. Output levels up to a hair above 1,000 lumens. What’s a good charger and 18650 battery brand? Cr123’s are getting expensive. The nitecore d4 gets good reviews.

D4 or d2 will work fine. If only used for 18650 a 2 bay is all you need. The high mA 18650s last a loooong time. Never had any problems with any brand of protected 18650 (I have olight, Fenix, and zebralight). I highly recommend neutral white over cool white, as neutral white renders truer colors and a high cri aids even further in blood tracking. Zebralight has several older models on sale. This is a good one http://www.zebralight.com/H600Fc-III-High-CRI-Floody-Neutral-White-18650-Headlamp_p_172.htmlThe floody is a good compromise between the flood and spot+fill. Although you can basically turn a spot+fill into a floody with some frosted scotch tape. I love the flood for field dressing, cooking, and other hands on night time work.

I bought 8 of these 5 or 6 years ago. They are all over the house, a few in my shop. One in my backpack, one in my blind bag, one in my truck.
They are decent quality for price and if one goes down, I've got some others.

I’d like a headlamp in the 400-500lm range. With a lot of battery life.
Seems the new ones are very bright 1000lm, but with little run time.
Then the next brightness down is like 250lm for medium. Kinda leaves a gap.

I am fine with lower output head lamps. If I need high lumens, I can always use a hand held Fenix of Surefire. The head lamp I like the best is a BlackDiamond ReVolt. 300 lumens, has selectable brightness levels, runs on three AAA batteries if your charge runs low in the field.
