“We have heard that there are a number of casualties,” WEAR-TV in Pensacola reported during a special report.
Annie Blanks, a reporter at the Pensacola News-Journal, tweeted that “NAS Pensacola confirms reports of an active shooter on base. Reported around 7 a.m. [Central time] today. Both gates are currently closed and base is on lockdown.”
Blanks later tweeted, “Active shooter confirmed. Shots fired. Authorities are working to ‘take down’ the shooter. Scanner traffic indicates ten patients transported to hospitals. Three medical helicopters en route to base.”
Reports of the possible active shooter began appearing on social media shortly after 8 a.m. Eastern time.
“There’s an active shooter on base in Pensacola I can literally hear the gun shoots,” Twitter user @kinglanikaa tweeted.
