Hunted yesterday with a friend who had a permit for a State Park. I did not have a tag but I know the area well and went along for a good time. Had two birds on the roost that hit the ground and never gobbled again that we could hear. Little later we had a response from the other direction. Had that bird within 40 yards two times, just below a ridge and he would not come up. Moved on him, switched calls, silent treatment and tried all the tricks we could come up with. At one point he moved away from the ridge and we advanced to the edge and set up. We could see him strut back and forth (he had a rope!) for 45 minutes before we moved down the ridge to try that ploy but to no avail.
He was unkillable for us that day, his time will come for someone at some point. We spent from 6:15am until 10:30am with him befor he had had enough and hit the road.
Public land birds can be hit hard by pre-season scouting and all the lucky hunters that draw tags. Between the two of us we have almost 60 years experience with spring birds and we just ran out of ideas but had a ball!

Alot better than not hearing a thing! That's what happens on most of the public land around here.
Sounds like ya'll had a good time and got to see some action.
Maybe next time he'll make a fatal mistake.
Good Luck

Alway fun when you can see and hear birds. It sucks when they get the tight mouth and you can't find them.
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

Your right, have had lots of days that I don't hear a thing and you know for sure THEY can hear my calls. Maybe it is my calling??? I'll take Sonny-Boy on Saturday to the honey hole and see whats shaken.
