I came across an article several years ago about the fallacy of recycling. It said the majority of plastics recycled were used for...wait for it...recycle bins. Nothing short of a racket.

As far as recycling plastic goes I always say no one does anything out of the kindness of their heart. If there's not a profit in in no one is going to do it in the end. Hell even metal recycling isn't doing the hottest right now. Its not even worth picking up scrap metal around me.

I know this will raise hackles, but if there was a deposit on all this plastic/glass chit 99.9% would be picked up

Locally, we were asked to stop saving glass, as the market was glutted. Glass that now goes into landfills can be "mined" if needed, as it doesn't deteriorate.

I've given a veteran who lives by selling scrap metal a whole bunch from my father's house, but he says the market is very low right now.

Apparently, paper recycling is pretty dependent on clean material. Thirty years ago when I started working in DC, the law forbade any contaminating material, with fines for not doing a good job of screening. That's a tough job when most folks don't really GAS, or are openly rebellious sbout the whole deal. Glossy paper, glued bindings etc. are big no-nos and supposedly spoil a whole load, and the cost to screen them out prohibitive.

I've long though that a lot of this stuff should be incinerated with the smoke scrubbed and maybe even sifted for useful stuff. Use the heat for generating electricity or to heat large buildings with steam.

There was a story on the local news here last summer about recycling. Story said that once it got to the dump site, it wasn't sorted anyway.

Ever since then I throw it all out because they only pick up our recycle every other week.

Except for the metal why not burn the stuff in power plants? I have a neighbor that burns everything in his outdoor heating/hot water unit.

We could recycle glass and metal 70 years ago, then the geniuses all told us that plastic was better. In 10-20 years, we’ll be back to cans and glass bottles..

Recycling is great if there are local plants about to process the materials. We are 5 hours from a city of any size with reprocessing facilities. Hauling fees alone put economics in the toilet. The only reason a load leaves this community is when some trucker hopes to at least cover fuel expenditures as opposed to going home with an empty rig.

Our community does have a heavily subsidized recycling center. They are so overwhelmed, however, that I feel like apologizing if I have to drop off a load.

^^^^^ Yes, we are 320 mi from Portland and 290 Mi from Sacramento. The recycle bins in our rural county have been getting dumped after hours in the landfill loads for the last 4 years. I've got a friend who runs front end loader there.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Yep... our local trash company stopped taking "recycle" stuff. When asked why they no longer offer the recycling option, they stated that it all went into the same dump as the county was doing anything with the recycle part...

Well there is a 10 cent deposit on a lot of it, here in Oregon/Potlandia.....

That still doesn't make a dent in what they want it to be...

all it does, is keep the transients in spare change... and the methheads, when they can't steal enough stuff...

I can go over to Costco and buy 40 bottles ( 1 litre size ) of water for $2.95 and no sales tax... but then $4.00 deposit on the bottles...

so what this has done, is that those Transients, Methheads etc, can go purchase a couple of cases of them on their Food Stamp Card...

Then they go right out in the parking lot, dump all the water out in the parking lot... take the bottles back in for the refund...

so they do that with 3 cases, they pocket $12.00....

so I'll humbly submit, putting a deposit on plastic isn't all that someone might think it is....

It’s picked up alright, but once you redeem the plastic, glass and aluminum you still have to toss it someplace.

I’d say you’d have to start at the packaging step of a product before it becomes “trash”, if you wanna “fix” something.

There's another thread going on Keurig plastic cups.
