Hello, I recently picked up a pre 64 Winchester 1952 receiver date, in a custom wood stock, that’s been re-barreled in 257 Roberts with a custom barrel. On the side of the barrel above the cartridge it’s stamped Womack. I’ve googled Womack barrels and not much comes up other than some mention of a man named Lester Womack who used to be a gunsmith back in 60’s up through the 80’s. Maybe made his own barrels? I know he wrote a book on commercial Mauser actions in 1980, but that’s about it. Anyway I’m just curious to know more about what I have. It’s a beautiful rifle. Looks like whom ever put it together did a great job. I’ll post pics if anyone wants to see it. Hopefully someone can share some knowledge. My plans are to use it. I’m anxious to see how it shoots. Thanks!
Would love to see some photos. I corresponded with Les when I was working for the Park Service at the Grand Cayon on the burro fiasco. Les had also worked at the park killing burros years before. I have his Mauser book and know he assembled rifles but don't think he actually made barrels.
I have a custom Mauser barreled and stocked by Mr. Womack. He also forged the military bolt handle into a spotter configuration. I was told by the original owner that he used Douglas barrels on his rifles. JC
Here’s some pictures guys. Also I think I’ve got some better quality images I uploaded in the miscellaneous forums if you want a better look. Thanks for the info so far!
