I have a wildcat .17 based on the 22/250 case and could use some load data. How would I go about determining some safe loads to begin with? The only two loads I've been able to find use 4350 and 4320, but so far haven't hit magic. Speed is not my number one consideration, only accuracy. Is that where these programs come into play? Thanks for any help.

You gave no specifics, so I arbitrarily chose a 25-grain Berger for this example of QuickLOAD. Bear in mind that this is NOT loading data, it is calculated estimates. Cartridge : .17/22-250 Rem
Bullet : .172, 25, Berger M Var #17308
Useable Case Capaci: 40.765 grain H2O = 2.647 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.310 inch = 58.67 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm
Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.
Matching Maximum Pressure: 58500 psi, or 403 MPa
or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 107 %
These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

If I was looking at loading for this one using that bullet, I'd probably opt for Retumbo or H1000 and Re23 looks like a good candidate, but I lean toward temp tolerant powders. Note that powder consumption is damn near 100% for everything, likely owing to the bore size. Looks like the slower the burn, the better. Maybe a handful of grass clippings and a couple of match heads?

Try <saubier.com> for your wildcat recipe. They have pages of small-bore threads and often there is a member who knows your cartridge well who will speak up. You may have to become a member, but that shouldn't scare anybody.

I may need to invest in one of these programs.

I may need to invest in one of these programs. Agreed. I've never completed one from scratch but have played around a lot with altering parent cartridges. You need QuickDesign and QuickLoad together, esp. if you're building proprietary cases. Enormously useful.

I may need to invest in one of these programs. It's a great tool and a fun toy. When you start fooling around with it, you'll probably get to playing " what if" and you'll spend hours fiddling. It's easy to lose track of time once you start doing that. It will lead you to insights you never pondered. Buy it.

Pic reminds me of the .22 Eargensplittenloudenboomer. If it doesn't have a name I recommend .17 Neddledick, or just ND for short..
