A few days ago I asked, here, for info on a Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag. We had a nice truck topper we were trying to sell for $425. A gentleman called and offered the Ruger as a trade.....hence my questions. Ha called back, and took the Ruger of off the table and paid cash. I’’m really bummed, it was a 5” SS Redhawk, like new with Hogue grips. If I I were shopping, and I’m not (as we’re handgun poor)....that’s exactly what I would’ve bought. But probably not for $425! mad memtb

I would have been bummed as well. It was probably a 5.5", don't think they ever made a 5".

smokinginggun, Your probably right, I knew it was more than 4” but nowhere close to the 7 1/2’s or 8 3/8’s I already have.....I guessed at 5”. memtb

You don't actually say that the Redhawk was $425. If it was, you should've jumped on it. If you can't get any replies on here, a good source is Gunbroker, looking at completed auctions where the gun in question actually sold.

I looked back through your posts and a cursory review only produced a question about whether the Redhawk had ever been manufactured in nickel. I answered it, as did several others. There was no question about what it was worth unless I'm mistaken.

Like the old fisherman says, you gotta be quicker than that.

EthanEdwards, Yep, we were asking $425.00 for the truck camper shell, he offered the handgun as an even trade....then reneged! So....he got the shell for $425.00 and kept his handgun! mad memtb

I know this doesn't help any but here is my 1983 5.5" 44mag. It's been to Bowen for their standard treatment and I added a set of Altamont grips. Ruger still makes this same model and it sells for around $810 new. It's a hefty chunk of steel for sure.

Thanks! I'm hoping it becomes more of a collectable one day, it has that little access door that you see at the top of the grips is on the left side. I think '83 was the only year they did that and all the ones afterwards it's on the right side.

I guess wishful thinking on my part. I just looked it up and Ruger started making them in 1979 and it looks like the first four years were like mine, so probably not that rare.

They've been made for a long time, as you say, and many have been produced. The first I knew of them was reading Elmer Keith's thoughts in his Gun Notes column in Guns and Ammo. He liked them very much. That was the 7 1/2" stainless model, which was the only one available for awhile. People were cutting theirs down and they came out with the 5 1/2" model in the mid-eighties if memory serves. I don't have a Ruger book and didn't look it up. After that, they came out with Blued models.

I'd say the Redhawk is one of Ruger's most successful firearms and one of their best overall.

smokinggun, That’s pretty much identical, except for the grip, to the gun .....I didn’t get! So....now I’m “back on the hunt” for a 4” or 5” S&W 460, for a carry gun, while fishing, hiking ect. memtb

I know where there is one for sale here in Billings if that might interest you memtb. I believe it is 4 or 5 inch and comes with a buttload of ammo. His initital asking price is $1200 for all; but, I get the feeling he will come down. Sorry I don't have an actual ammo count. The amount of ammo alone could make it a good deal. PM me if you are interested and I'll put you in contact with the guy.

You want a 460 as a carry gun? You built like a sasquatch or just like walking leaning to one side?

Chest carry....”tanker style” holster. It would be a nice companion for my 8 3/8” 460, that is impractical for anything but hunting! memtb
