That was my plan but it got too dark for a 40 yard shot with it.

Our group has been at it for around 15 years…...….one day a year. Our heaviest, to date, is 677 pounds.

Some big bear in Virginia too. No 800 pounders but quite a few in the 500-600 pound range. I passed up 3 different ones the 2nd week of muzzleloader season. One of those was easily 450-500.

You hear about an occasional hog around here to 700 pounds but I doubt I've seen a 500 pounder yet!

The bears in the Rockies and much of the interior west generally have a larger, rangier skeletal size but carry a lot less weight. The skull on a 350 lb Rocky Mountain bear can qualify for B&C while a 500 lb bear in the mid-Atlantic states won't. The speculation is the bears in the west need to be rangier to negotiate the terrain.

The highest scoring B&C bear I ever helped take was a desert bear above Canyonlands National Park in southern Utah, and I doubt this bear weighed much over 300 lbs. He was an old lanky, skinny boar but his skull measured over 22 inches.
