I got this bear last week on Kodiak, We had a great hunt and saw lots of nice bear. My son Kyle and a good buddy were with me.The bear squared 9'10'' and the skull was 28 3/16. I used my 375 RUM with 300 gr. failsafe bullets.

Geezus man! Awesome

For educational purposes, can you elaborate on the 300gr failsafe performance?

Do it today. Tomorrow there may be a law against it.

They worked ok, but in my opinion I think the "X" bullets are better. This was my 3rd. brown bear and the other two were also big and I used X bullets on them in the 375 cal with better results. This bear took 4 shots to put him down for good and all shots were in the right spots, Frist shot was in the neck looking at us (only shot I had) 2,3,and 4 shots were behind and on the shoulder. The last three shots exited thur both shoulders. I've used X bullets for the last 16 year's and love them, just wanted to try the failsafe's

Kyle's bear he took with 180 gr. X's out of a 300 rsm with good results.

Their a good bullet just think the X's are better.

I have found that the failsafes don't expand at all unless they hit something significant. I used them for a few animals and wasn't too happy either.

Congrats on the bears...they look awesome.

I am headed up to Kodiak in the last week of July. Unfortunately I won't be on a hunt like you were.
I will be doing some sightseeing with the lovely and the outlaws....oops did I say that....I mean in-laws.

That is just simply outstanding!! As if my case of bear fever wasn't bad enough and you post pics like that smile. It has been a dream of mine to hunt on Kodiak for a big bear for a long time. I am booked in to go this October and simply can't wait. Congratulations to you and your son. What optics did you use on your rifles?

Elkman,

We used Leupold 6X42's on both rifles!

You will have a good time, Kodiak is a great place with big bears. Remember the best way to get something big is to hold off and don't shoot anything small, which is very hard to do at times. We looked at 7 bears that were 9 and 9 foot plus before I hit the switch on this one!

Good luck on your hunt.

Dave

Both bears shown are awesome animals, hard for us southern guys to fathom bears like those. You mention taking other big bears, but does the boy have you beat overall? grin

I know everyone is asking lots of questions, but I would love to hear about that 180gr .30 Barnes and how it worked on something of that size.

Badboyz,

I got a Rem mag. action from Stick last fall in a gun trade..... I bought a rem. factory 26in. s.s. take-off barrel in 375 rum for $50.00. Sent the action & barrel to my gunsmith, he cut the barrel back to 22 inches and slapped it on the action.

I do my reloading and worked up a load with the 300 gr failsafe's at 2900 fps. and they shot under 1" at a 100 yds.
I have two 375 AI's and sold a 378 wby last summer.. so far i like the 375 RUM!
