A week or so ago I asked for opinions on the Browning BOSS system. Thank you to all that gave input.

Well, I bought the gun...a Browning A-Bolt II in 7mm-08. It has the traditional BOSS on it and I would like to pick up a CR so I don’t accelerate the loss of hearing for myself or any others close. My question is this. Are they cartridge specific or are the only caliber specific?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

There seems to be some interchangability. If you search gunbroker for Browning BOSS in the Gun Parts section, you'll see them listed.

I bought mine in 1994 when they came out. Some time later the CR came out. I contacted browning and they sent it to me free of charge. Mine is a Abolt II Medallion 7 mag.

On the back of the CR box, there is specific model numbers for a specific cartridge. I tried ro take of pic of writing on back of box but its hard to read. Mine is model R720BM for my 7mag. Pick out you model below (gloss, matte, stainless) and that's the model number needed.

Your 7-08mm needs a specific model:

R720AP (for gloss rifles)
BAR Mar II (All versions)
A-Bolt (Gloss Bluing)
Medallion
Gold Medallion
Varmit

R720AM (for matte rifles)
Abolt (matte Bluing)
Composite Stalker
Hunter
Eurobolt
Varmit
Eclipse

R720AS
Abolt (stainless)
Greywolf

I also had a thread protector made of SS to totally remove the boss all together to make the rifle 24" instead of 27" with the Boss or CR. I just haven't had a chance to play around with it yet to see if it will shoot some factory 162 eld-x to sub moa.

No problem. I have used mine for over 30 years until this pass season when I took deer with a newly purchased Tikka T3 lite 308. One thing you may want to do it replace the stock recoil pad or lack there of. The one on mine was hard as granite. I replaced it with a limbsaver.

One other thing 300, My adjustment screw and boss screws on very easy. It use to have some resistance, but now it just spins on very freely. I have contacted browning to see if there is anything I can apply on the threads to give it a little more "holding" power. Even when I tighten the Boss against the adjustment nut, both try to turn. It use to not do that. Anyway, if you run across something to help it get a little more holding to stay in place, let me know.

The threaded portion of barrel has a slot machined across the threads(parallel to bore axis). In that slot is a thin piece of clear plastic that is made to create resistance in the adjustment nut and hold it in place. You can remove the plastic piece and turn it over to expose a fresh side that hasn’t had threads run across it yet. This keeps the nut tighter.

Funny you said that. Browning just emailed me back after 2 days of waiting. They mentioned the same thing and if the plastic fell out, then insert a piece of weed eater string in its place. Same outcome.
