Wow - some exceptional craftmanship on that rifle. Even impressed a "collector" like me. Mark (Vig)- isn't this REALLY your kind of gun?

I'm not one for reworked rifles but this thing is fantastic! When you consider what we pay for 99's with that amount of work and craftsmanship...$7500 range seems like a steal. I wonder how many hours went into its making?

I thought of Mark when I first saw the piece, too.

Thanks Don! We'll agree it started as a take-down... wink wink wink

If I am not mistaken I examined that rifle at one of the big shows a few years ago. It is quite lovely BUT my recollection is the bore is worn. Reminded me of all the British rifles that have been coming in to the US the last decade that are described as "refurbished to new condition" but are all cordite eroded. Do not understand why these guys making showpieces do not start with a rifle with a mint bore, there are plenty of them to be found at fair prices.

.....That is a work of art! Not really a shooter for a guy like me,more a museum piece. I dearly love the wonderful character of the Savage 99. Searching for a criticism of it's design,i'd side with old cactus Jack O'Connor's complaint about excessive drop at the comb. The Savage stock works for peep sights, which perhaps better fit it's vintage anyway, but it's design ,and accuracy, accomidates scope sighting better with less comb drop. The straighter stock has the added benefit of reducing felt recoil, although other than the .358 Winchester chambering, there's little to complaign of anyway.

Beautiful piece of craftmanship and art! Now, bring it up to current standards with black Teflon paint on the metal and get rid of that damned wood and put a real drop-in plastic stock on it with pressed checkering and visible mold seams.
