All I can say is that it's going to be a very interesting week to watch the news. Markets, super Tuesday, and the virus.
And I have Jury duty.

"More than 89,000 people have been infected worldwide and more than 3,000 have died."
That's a one percent death rate upon contracting it. Likely folks with preexisting conditions and the elderly make up the majority of the 1% dying from it, which cannot be any comfort to most members here.

Octogenarians who contract it have a 15% death rate. That's gonna be rough if it gets into nursing homes especially.

I didn't work out the exact most likely probabilities.

I thought you taught school. 3 out of 89 sure as heck is not 1%. And you have no idea what the mortality rate is until those 89,000 have either recovered or died.

Here's a comparison between hospitilization and death rates this year for people age 18-49 compared to 65+ https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/2018-2019.html
age cases hosp deaths hosp_rate death_rate
18-49 11,913,203 66,869 2,450 0.56% 0.02%
65+ 3,073,227 279,384 25,555 9.09% 0.83%
So the "normal" flu is 40 times more deadly for those over 65. Of course, two years ago that number of death approached 3x.

Like lay with dogs ya will get flees. This season, which includes fall/winter for influenza, over 16000 have died from the flu. It is just peaking now in most northern states, so there will be a few more thousand added most likely. Given that COVID-19 appears to have a much higher CFR, that doesn't bode well. This may be "just a flu bug" in street language, but it most likely will be one of the worst "flu bugs" most of us have experienced. PS--it is not an influenza bug but rather a completely new coronavirus that no human has ever before encountered

No such thing as the normal flu. Frequently, the approved flu shot isn’t correct for that years flu strain.

A man in his 70s died at EvergreenHealth Medical Center in Kirkland — the same hospital where the death of a man in his 50s was announced yesterday. Both men had underlying health problems. The three other new cases are two women, one in her 80s and one in her 90s, and a man in his 70s. All three have other health issues

No such thing as the normal flu. Frequently, the approved flu shot isn’t correct for that years flu strain. First thing many Coronavirus deniers ask somebody who is scared of it is, "did you even take your flu shot this year?". "This year" if you took a flu shot you may have taken it back in September, in which case, it probably wore off in mid-December and you are vulnerable again. Plus the fact that this year's flu shots were only partially effective...less so than usual because IIRC the one they vaccinated for only accounted for like 40% of the flu's that were being experienced. I have no idea if later-given flu vaccines were/are more effective due to a change in the recipe. The main info we have on this remains from Asia. Many questions are unanswered. Best to take all the precautions you can to not get it and at the same time, not panic.
