I picked up my first boat recently, it’s just a 14’ jon boat and it’s going to have a 6.5hp longtail on it. Is anyone able to explain in simple terms what is required for navigation lights on a boat this size? Currently it has a red & green light mounted on the front

At minimum you will need a white stren light.

Google should help, but I believe a red/green bow and a taller all white stern light are required to be illuminated when running at night. Stern light only when anchored.

Thanks for the replies. That was generally what I was seeing as well, red/green on the front and white on the stern, so I went ahead and bought the white light. Just couldn’t find much for boats under 7meters and wasn’t sure if maybe they had different regs.

They may be less stringent, but the setup above is pretty much essential for safety regardless of size when running at night on any sort of open water.
