Nothing special about an xtr sporter, but the xtr featherweights have a following.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

It’s just a sporter.
I was looking for an Alaskan M70 but they will be double the price of that one or more for a used one.

I'll take a push feed Model 70 second only to a CRF Model 70.

Thoughts? No. They are generally an Excellent rifle. I have both the CRF Classics and XTR push feeds. Love them both for different reasons. It's a fair price. If I was in your position and wanting one I'd not hesitate putting down the cash.

Winchester quality has been all over the place, but at the time the XTR's were produced was one of the high points.

With the original recoil pad it will kill both ends good gun but plan on a limb saver. Pad or better. MB

I think that the XTR were the best fit/finished rifles that New Haven ever produced.
If you don't mind push feed (which I do not), then I would buy that in a second.

I have that exact rifle. Bought it clean, used and proceeded to burn (at least) 13 lbs of IMR-4350 through it. At one time, I was getting 5/8" groups with 180 grain Grand Slams....... 5 shots at 100. It's slid from that a good bit now. Sadly (?) with a couple other .300 Mags in the safe, I fear the XTR may be reincarnated as a .264 Win Mag.
I always kinda thought it was a pussycat on the factory pad. Opinions on that vary..........but it's a beautiful rifle and a quality rifle.
Buy.

harv,
Good deal, congratulations to on earning yourself that rifle.
My late Leupold VX-11's & VX-111's have proven to be quite robust... I've never gone easy on them, 12ga Full House Turkey loads from a light weight Single Shot, stout recoiling magnum chambered lightweight rifles, in and out of the creek a couple of times, days on end of below zero temps, and they have kept on running.
They're often found for around couple hundred bucks.
You of course can glass your new rig with anything your heart, and bank account, desire.

Found a decent VX2 3-9x40 I’ll put on it.
Are these one or two piece bottom metal rifles?
