Probably most likely a 99D in that serial range, rather than a SR with t/d option. Nice rifle, and for $125 you're stealing it. Congrats.

I'll PM you my email address and I'll post it for you tonight (PM equals private message, click on My Stuff at the top of the page and them Messages and then my message to you).

I think it would be found in the log book as a Short Rifle. This is a 1920 rifle and from what data I've collected the 99-D name didn't start till sometime in the 23xxxx range. I don't think there would have been any difference in the two rifle.

Nice rifle! Take good care of it. The Short Rifle/99-D is one of my favorits. smile

This rifle is in an interesting serial number range. According to Murray, the 1899-A Short Rifle stopped at approximately serial number 220,000 and this is about 5,000 numbers after that. On the other hand, the M99-D didn't start until about 238,xxx. So, what models were the rifles made in between these numbers, considered by Savage to be? Supposedly, if it is a M99-D it would have the SAVAGE MODEL 99 on the frame ring top. Does this rifle have that marking or not???

The "SAVAGE MODEL 99" wasn't added till the ramp sight period...1926-1927. The only "for sure" is what it is listed as in the Savage Log Book.

The 99-B, C & D all seem to start around the same serial range. One of your members lettered #232xxx. It came back as a 99-D with a note from JC that it was one of the earliest D's he had found in the books. But, I would not be surprized to find that there is a period where both Short Rifles and D's over lap in the book since production didn't run in true serial order.

There were a lot of changes made after WWI as Savage geared back up with commercial production. The year 1920 was a high production year. Lots of small design changes were coming into the system. The 99-F was the first to change early that year with the B, C, D, E & G a little later (into 1921).

Hi guys,

On other forums, i read that your site is especialy recognized for the knowledge on Savage arms. I can say that it is really true. I also want to tell you that your devotion on helping other Savage owners is remarkable and appreciated. The time you spare is very helpful. Although i'm new on this forum, i already upgraded alot my knowledge on Savages. Finally, I'm considering going to the fest since it's a couple of hours from my house. I have to check some other stuff first. Thanks to all of you again

Don, you might look down your rifle row. You should find that the crowning started earlier than 225xxx on the heaver barrels. I have two 1899-F in the 190000 range that are crowned and a Short Rifle in the 200000 range. I think the featherweight barrels were alway crowned. I wonder what generated the change?

Rick, al the featherweight, and original250-3000 rifles are crowned. The earliest heavy barrel rifle crowned is a 1899A in 30-30 S/N 214542, just another savage quirk. Don confused
