I have been shopping for months for a duel purpose motorcycle. I have looked at Honda 650s, Kawasaki 650KLR, Suzuki 350 400 and 650. i tried BMW 650 single and big boxer GS. I even tried a Buel. when it was all said and done I found a Cagiva Gran Canyon powered by a 904 Ducati. The price is good and I have only dreamed of one of these machines never expecting to locate one. Only 500 were ever brought into the country. The new 1200 Ducati Multistrada is just not the same. I found this one in Portland Oregon it has lots of extras and fairly low milage. Will pick up next Monday. So my question to all of you folks out there is there any Ducati owners on the board? I did find a guy who wants to trade a Harley for a tractor...funny I thought all Harleys came with a plow hitch that is what farm equipment is for. grin

Just curious, what are the duel purposes?

I don't know much about motorcyles, though I do read Cycle World sometimes because of the cute illustrations in the tech Q&A in the back.. you know, with the little mice grin

I enjoy watching motorcyle racing too.

Valve adjustment....I will buy the tools and learn to do it my self. I did my other bikes for years including the shim bucket Kawasakis. That is part of owning exotics. I worked my way through college by being a bike wrench amoung other things which included selling and servicing guns. After owning over a 100 motorcycles I ain't afraid grin Besides there is a Ducati service shop just 30 miles away. And all it takes is a wheel barrow full dollar bills to keep a Duc in tip top shape.
So I have 6000 miles before I need to service it. Just had it's 6000 mile service including valve adjustment. But you do make a good point. I wonder how much the shop rate is? Could just be worth it to have them do it.

Back when I rode 'dual purpose' meant a bike suitable for the street or for trail riding. My last dual purpose bike was a 1967 Honda 305 Scrambler. The rest were mostly dirt bikes. Now its just 4 wheelers.

I'm guessing it means you get two of them in a little wooden display case, and that to use them you set up back to back, ride forward about ten paces, then do a peelout turn and roar back to the center to play chicken.

Or something like that.

I find it really interesting that Honda had both 300 and 305 scramblers both with the CL 77 designation. I have owned both and if memory serves there were no differences between the two. This is a good trivia question to win a few bucks off of your biker pals especially the younger know it all guys.

The dual purposes are dirt and street. I've owned two Dual Sports, both Honda. My first was an XR600 that really wasn't street legal, but was licensed as such, and I later replaced it with an XR250L which was obviously much smaller but still sufficed, got 70+mpg, weighed nothing, and was easier to start. A good tradeoff IMO.

I sold it before I got married and made a deal with my wife to not buy another bike. I'm on the "ten year plan" trying to renig on that contract because I loved riding. Being able to leave home and ride anywhere my heart lead me was wonderful. The "freedom" that the roadbike guys talk about can't be experienced on anything but a Dual Sport IMO.

I try not to think about it too much...

The CL 77 had the 305cc engine. The CL 72 was a 250. Same with the CA Dream series and the CB Superhawks.

I hear what your sayin' but my goal is to not only get back on a bike, but get my wife on there too (prolly a roadbike for two-ups). I sold my bike because I had a lot of "stuff" when I married and moved, and I used the cash against the new house figuring I'd replace the bike later.

Our agreement was just too tempting at the time--------ten firearms(over time) and an ATV, no questions asked. She's been very good about holding to her end of the deal, and she's actually bought several guns for me even though she's still luke warm about them herself.

I agree that life is short, and I'm missing out on a very enjoyable avenue of living. Ironically, the closest I've come to dying (while riding) was during a slow hill climb on the ATV with her as a passenger.

HOLY CRAP!!!

When you said DP, I thought you were talking about a Honda 400 XL.

How does one maneuver a 900 cc anything through the tight and twisties, or over logs and granite boulders in the trail?

I am used to a bike I can lay on its side and drag under a log or lift over the top.

I think his plans for it must involve more asphalt and gravel than mountain trails. BTW if I get another DP bike it will be an XR400. It's a perfect ballance IMO for DP riding that leans heavily towards the dirt but still has the power and manners for public roads. KTM makes a couple bikes I could learn to love also.

I hear ya man! My dual purpose bike is a Road King Classic. Has been down gravel/dirt roads a couple of times. Can't drag it under a log, heck can't drag it! And it's a little heavy to jump or catch some air with. But, it is a dual purpose machine. It restores both body and spirit evry time I ride! smile

Alabama... I don't have anything against Hogs it Harley's man.
Hogs is good targets. grin I just really like high performance machines over the cruizer. Besides my buddies around here all own harleys and they would expect nothing different of me if I did not go along with them. unless I happened to find a XR 1000.
there is a 130 mile ride on the 24th that is for duel purpose machines if I have the Cagiva all 904cc of it I am going on the ride. For the rough stuff I have my quad.
