My buddy Bob had a short, intense relationship with Slim. They met in an elevator at a convention ( early 70's). At the time, Bob was the shotgun editor for Gun Dog magazine. Slim was trying to find a black powder rifle. They weren't all that common back then. Bob had a Thompson Center caplock and had hunted with it-- not much of an expert by any means. Slim figured Bob knew more than he did, so Slim spent a good long time picking Bob's brain about muzzleloaders. If memory serves, Bob finally took him over to the Thompson Center booth and dropped him there.
Back in 1984, I got the bug to buy a muzzleloader. My buddies all said, "Talk to Bob! He's the expert." They were still ribbing him over the incident.

There's an old BC comic that says in two panels: Slim Pickens -- A funny name for a man we all miss very much.

Did you ever hear where the name "slim pickins" came from? As a kid he loved rodeos, and his father did not approve. The kid entered the rodeo, but didn't want his father to know, so he needed a fake name to be announced over the loud speakers. He couldn't pick a name fast enough for the clerk, who told him it might as well be "slim Pickins" since his chances of winning were so low. So that was what was entered as his name. He won.

the only real difference between a good tracker and a bad tracker, is observation. all the same data is present for both. The rest, is understanding what you're seeing.
