The John Wayne drink thread has me wondering, does anyone know what brands, or type of whisky the real cowboys drank back then? What the hell is wrong with you people? John Wayne was a fictional character. Nearly nothing about that character or the movies the actor who played him was in were based on reality. Are you all really this out of touch with reality? Kill joy...Wyane drank Ol No 9...

Lots of home distilled too. My revolutionary War descendants had 5 barrels of whiskey on their census, can't remember the year. Imagine if you had to list your booze stores on your census?

BTW-there is an old west whiskey distillery now, think it's based on Utah. They make a decent rye and bourrye.

I still drink Old Overholt. Had a bit just last night. We used to call it Old Overalls. But when you can't get Beam's or better... Wild Turkey had a real nice rye but I haven't seen it in years. I prefer rye, makes a tasty Manhattan. For real rot-gut you have to throw a couple plugs of tobacco into the barrel, then you can thin it out with water when you bottle it. They really did that. If you ever swallowed when you should have spit you'll believe it.

Thank you, interesting read, one I'd never considered,
My ancestors smuggled Rum for the caribbean because it was a lot more profitable than shipping sugar to England then the US and paying NAvigational taxes on it, People are resourceful. if there's a market, a product will be supplied, If there's n market - then create one...

I once read that saloons offered a wide variety of liquors and even some mixed drinks were popular. I can't find the reference now but if there was a rail line nearby you could move a lot of merchandise including adult beverages, after the war.

I've read of black peppercorns in whisky give a taste of stronger drink.
One of the first mixed drinks was, Stone Fence, rye whisky, and applejack cider.

Had a college professor who was an old west Scholar. He described the old trade whiskey as cheap whiskey, cut with Missouri River water and fortified with tobacco juice and black powder. He mixed some up for us one night and a few of us tried it. It was NASTY!
