Copy. How far is out a ways? I really really like the performance of the 168 VLD at the 2700-2900 launch speed. Great bullet....

I don't know about anybody else; but, I simply accept the desire of the OP whether it be because he simply likes the 280, thinks it functions better or owning one makes him enjoy ham sandwiches better and try to simply answer the question as opposed to all other options that may exist, whether they be better or not. Heck, they could be added in addition to resolution of his desire.
I for one am a 280 lover, without arguing about everything else in the world that may be better, and would also like a Tikka T3X in 280 in addition to the 7/08, 270 and others I currently own. I think the best way to do it, as costly as it may be, is to get a smith to install an aftermarket barrel of your desired length on a current long action T3X in 270 or 30-06. As popular as the 280 Ackley has become, I'm surprised they haven't put one on the market.

Not the VLD, but I helped my good friend develop a load for his T3 Lite in 7mm Remington Magnum with the 168 Classic. The Classic is obviously more rounded in profile than the VLD, but it shoots extremely well. We didn't push the velocity hard. It's only 2830 FPS. Even so, the T3 Lite bucks pretty hard from prone for 40 round practice sessions. He wears a sissy pad on his shoulder, even with the Limbsaver. I'd imagine that a .280 Remington could match that velocity with 5 - 10 grains less powder, but I don't know how much it would affect perceived recoil. Load development day:Checking zero, 5-shots:10-shots:

We've talked about trying different bullets, or full throttle magnum loads, but he's happy with the velocity, groups, and less wear and tear on the rifle, scope, and shooter

I have a load for my 7mm Rem Mag with the 162 eldx at a hair under 3k. I guess I’m just bored.

What about the 7x64, pretty much identical to the 280.
