Have drilled and tapped several older recurves for sight holes, but every time I do it it seems to wrip the wood a bit as I drill it. Any ideas on how to drill a cleaner hole?

Wax or bar soap on the drill bit turning slowly. Make a stop on the drill bit out of tape. Clear debris out of drill bit often. Work slowly.
