I was reading an article in Handloader's April 2007 issue on the .250 Savage, I would like to look into purchasing this caliber one of these days and beside's the Model 99 and Ruger's model 77 did any other gun manufacuter's make a rifle in the .250-3000 caliber? Over this past winter I went to about 3 or four gun shows and I don't recall seeing one, are they hard to come by?

Seen a couple of others. Winchester 70's, though those will run you mega bucks to get one from the ones I've seen. Remington made a classic in 250 Savage, but next to impossible to find them either. Used to be you could pick up a barrel in 250 Savage for the Savage bolt actions, but haven't really seen any for sale.

But, if you're looking for a 250 Savage and that gives you an excuse to get a 99, why look elsewhere? :Grin:

That's what I'll probably end up doing is eventually get a Model 99 in the .250-3000, I did see a couple of them the other day on Gunbroker.com, guess I'll have to start saving up.

Other options are to have a current production bolt action re-barreled, buy a replacement barrel for a current production Savage rifle and swap the barrel, or purchase a barrel for an Encore. Not as classy as a 99, but you can get a 1-10 twist and the contour you want.

The 257s are my pet calibers. Living in the woodchuck capital of the world, a combination varmint / deer gun is my "cat's meow"!

As Calhoun said there were some good bolt action guns made recently by Remington, Ruger & Winchester but if you can find an early Savage Model 1920 or 26 with a good barrel don't go passing that up either. It's embarassing how good they shoot!

I've bought five 250-3000s in the last couple of years, a 1919 "1899" deluxe, a 1927 99 "F", 1922 Model 1920 (bolt action), a 1956 "F" and lastly a 1976 "CD". I've passed along the two early takedowns, but the rest are incredible shooting guns. (Actually, so were the TDs but they had chamber issues!)

Read the 1948 classic "Shots at Whitetails" by Larry Koller and you'll get an idea of what the 250-3000 Sav. is all about.

As long as the 22-250 lives, we'll never be out of brass and with handloads this caliber SHINES!

Why SAVAGE in this MAGNUM crazy world, doesn't release a proprietary cartridge like the 250 Savage Ackley Improved is a wonder??? ( Is anybody up there listening? )

Pick up a used 22-250 and have it rebored to 250.May be the cheapest way to go,I've been thinking of getting a ruger#1 made up in 250.

Don't think you'd have much trouble reboring a 243 to 250 either. As a caution, a lot of the pre-1960 Savage 250's didn't shoot longer bullets real well due to the twist rate that olgrouser mentioned, so I get the most luck with 87gr bullets. If you want longer/heavier bullets, find a later Savage.

Personally, I don't think deer or antelope at reasonable ranges are going to care if you use an 87gr bullet, but I do miss not being able to load up Partitions for those rifles.

forget the 243, the case body is longer that the 250 case body, use a 22-250 and you are all set. case body is right. Les

One more question for you Savage guys, I've also heard of a Savage 250, when someone mentions a Savage 250 is that the same thing as a .250-3000?

They called it 250-3000 when it first came out since it was the first centerfire to break 3000 FPS, later on they shortened it to 250 Savage. les

Winchester M-70 pre 64, Remington 700 Special Addition, Ruger 77, Ruger RSI, Ruger lt. wt. a number of Mausers, Savage 99 in many configurations, and probably some I just can't recall all came in that wonderful little caliber..A caliber that I consider head and shoulders better than the .243 Win...

You can have about any good bolt action rebarreled to a 250 savage. Try to get one with a 1x10 twist would be my advise.

My ranching family was high on the Savage 99 in 250 Savage and they killed elk and deer with them. I shot several elk and a lot of deer with a 250 savage..It never let anyone I know down.

This one is super accurate!! Rem. 700 classic in 250 Sav.

Nice rifle, Kenster! I'd love to run into one of those, but doubt I'd like the price.

I have one of those kenster99 and it is the most accurate, deer capable rifle I own. Hornady 100 grain with enough H-4895 for 2830 fps results in much less than 1" groups every time.
