Actually the times I've used the 9mm 124gr. +P (local PD duty ammo, Fed Hydra Shok) on hogs, it DIDN'T work as well as a moderately loaded 44 or 45 Colt with cast bullets.
I hadn't started casting yet, so I was still using some local Keith 250 44's and 265 45's and the usual Hornady, Nosler, Speer and Sierra stuff.

My buddy shot a piglet (he's PoPO) with the same 9mm load. It didn't keel over until the second shot through the lungs. Needless to say, he wasn't all horned up about his duty ammo.

At the time he lived with another buddy who just so happened to raise hogs. Prolapse or any visible deduction basically meant the critter wasn't even worth loading in the trailer. This was the late nineties; I think hogs went down to 7-8 bucks a hundred weight. Only the contract confinement operations at the time made any money.

During that time we shot a lot of hogs with all kinds of guns. We were all 20 something bachelors, so we ate good and shot a lot of worthless livestock.

I never saw the wonder nine as "the same thing"...but I'm sure it is.

It works the same way in a defensive situation.
I started this thread to show that some choose a defensive weapon that they don't feel is up to the taking of deer and pigs which are very comparable

In the 90's I used an Argentine Hi Power and 115 grain Silvertips against the Plague of Bluejays. One shot stop every time.

Will there be any bullet test videos coming forth? I have been waiting on the videos and haven't seen any. Maybe someone could make one of a deer or pig getting rapid fire and being made deceased by said calibers and bullets. After skinning the hide could be held up so we could see the sieve effect the rapid fire had as the barrage of bullets riddled the animal.
Videos, Videos some videos.

I re-read my post. It didn't make sense. I would use the 45 Super load for intentional deer hunting. But I used the 230 gr HP to finish the pig. Be Well, Rustyzipper.

the 9millermeter shotin casted bullets in 147 grains will for a fact kill a 300 pound sow if you is about 20yds away. It will go on thru the lungs areas. yall argues the stupidist of all arguments, holes though animuls and blood comin out is what kills the stuff, not the size of the hole, jimminy christmas.

Not an arguement it is a question, which you didn't answer. Did not ask if a 9mm would kill that is a given. The question is "which one would you choose"?

Killed lots with a .22LR
Killed a few deer with a .45acpbut a good many hogs with it. Most were killed with FMJ 230 ball ammo... not long shots so bullets did not really matter. Nothing over 30 yards. Neck or ear are bang flops... shot some hogs that were running and they'd go a few yards before piling up. More about placement than bullet at short ranges.

I have killed pigs with 45 acp and 40 pistols. I have had much better luck with good +P hollow points like the hyrdashock and Hornady XTPS.

I have had poor luck with standard velocity FMJs in 40 and 45.

Never used a 9mm but had great results with a 357 Sig with 147 grain Hornadys,it was a really quick killer. I also had equally good results with a 357 Magnum carbine using the 145 grain Silver Tip.

I have a Boarbuster trap and have killed 122 hogs in it over the last 18 months. Killed 14 the last couple of weeks. The little pigs are dispatched with a .22 rifle. The big ones are used to test various hunting and self defense loads.

If you guys want me to try something I can probably get it done. Killed several with 6.5 PRC using match bullets as well as hunting bullets to see how they worked at point blank range. Saw good things there too.
When I shoot big boars,I aLways try to put maxium stess on the bullet by placing the shot square into the shoulder so it has to get through the gristle plate shield.

So far the only bullets that I have seen stopped cold are standard velocity FMJs from a 45 ACP on a huge 292 pound boar. These are famous for penetration but were an epic fail that day.

I would look for loads that give a muzzle velocity of 1100 fps or more. It really seems to penetrate better and kill faster.
9mm
Edited to add that I did kill a good size boar last month with 9mm with standard velocity 115 grain hollow points, since it was a subcompact 9mm,and the load was mild.I used an under the ear head shot. Worked fine, but would be hesitant to try a shoulder shot with the same load.
