Have a 70 classic WSM action that I am rebarreling with a Bart 1:8.7 twist 2B. Back and forth between WSM and SAUM.

Rifle will be mid-lightweight LR/Hunting rig. At the moment, brass is widely available for both. Will be shooting 162-180gr bullets... usual suspects ELDs and Bergers.

I was inclined to go with the WSM bc of capacity and slight increase in factory ammo availability (if I was traveling and lost my ammo or something) but then I got myself all worked up the short neck and some random sh*te I heard about difficulties in working up loads for 7wsm. I've worked up loads for 300 WSM but that seemed pretty normal.

So now leaning toward SAUM bc of efficiency and case design. If SAUM is more forgiving in load development, that's helpful. Or maybe that is hooey.

Basically now have gotten my panties all in a wad. Would like to send this action and barrel out to git chambered.

Any and all thoughts are appreciated.

I’ve had zero trouble with load workup or the neck of the 7WSM.

Wizzum. Putting a Remington standardized chambering in a M-70 is blasphemy!

My 7wsm has been very easy to work up loads for and very accurate.

Agree with the Wizzum. Had no problem working up loads for my M-70. The short neck and long bullets will not be an issue with you having the barrel custom throated.

Why limit yourself to less cartridge capacity when the action length will be the same for either? I have had shining results with RL 19 in my 7 WSM’s.

Never have I read a better article on short 7’s. It even covers the 7-300 WSM.

Assuming the Winchester mag box is around 3.0”, I’d say load dummy rounds up with a 180 grain bullet of choice in each case and see where the base of the bullet lands in the N/S junction. The SAUM allows you a little more clearance.

I have owned both.

I still own a WSM.

My 270 WSM shoots my reloads extremely well and is 100% reliable feeding. It is extremely accurate with Nosler 140 Accubonds!
