I just picked up a 60 lb bear montana longbow. I’m wondering if I can replace the string with a performance one and pick up some speed without breaking anything. Which one do you recommend?

I looked at Three Rivers Archery site and Lancasters video of your bow.
Yes it's reinforced to use any of the modern string materials, Bear uses D97, Dynaflight rather than the older B55 which is safe for all bows.

It looks like a great bow at an attractive price too, shoot straight!

Oh so it already has a modern string on it. It just seems slow because I’m shooting it next to a 70 lb compound

You're going to have to look up a spine chart to fill in the variables. Arrow length, draw length, tip weight, added weight, fletching, release type.
The chart by Three Rivers worked perfectly when I was shooting longbows.
I shot carbon because I wanted consistent, predictable, performance without having to segregate a bunch of wood shafts into a bell curve.
Wood works well too but I went with carbon.

I've been shooting the wife's recurve along with my compound but I miss having a longbow. Your Bear has me pondering....
