I just traded into a pre64 Win. 338mag. made in 1959. I would rate the metal at 85 - 90% with no no scratches or dings, just thin blueing on top of barrel and floorplate. Otherwise quite clean. Bore and throat are crispt. The catch is the stock, an all walnut laminate-rollover checkpiece job with a thick highgloss finish. The stock is glassbeded and I sure very shootable but looks out of place on a fine old classic rifle.
I don't intend on keeping the gun and wonder about the stock. Should I pick up a pre.64 stock to sell it or I do have a good Brown Precision stock that is for that mod. rifle. Which would be more saleable? Thanks, Pete

Sell the stock on Ebay, and off the barreled action here.

If you are not keeping it, let the new owner decide how it should be restocked.

As 338s are not real common as far as pre-64s go I would guess that this particular model 70 may very well be worth more to a collector than it would as a pure hunting rifle providing nothing but the stock has already been changed on it. Before I put any aftermarket stock on it, I would see what the barreled action alone would bring. If I restocked it with anything it would be with something to keep it as original as possible.

The first thing I'd do would be to put a scope on it and shoot it. After that, you may just decide to keep it....... AD

Pedro-good to see you're still getting after it!
My old 70 I put on a piece of African Walnut via McMillan, it is on my 6/06 yote killer deluxe.
I'd consider going synthetic if I were you.

Bob, any "Full-Line" Browning dealer will no doubt tell you that the A-Bolt is a much better rifle than the pre-64 Model 70, and any one of Remington's bartered-stooges will imply in print that the Model 710's a better rifle as well...........
