Think of it like getting dad's car and putting new tyres on it.

Yes, my dad was not really sentimental with material things at all. Oh he kept a few mementos from my my grandpa like a 300 Savage (Model 99) but he didn’t keep the rifles up in good condition ether. I was the one who restored the Savage to original condition as close as I could.
Anyway, if the role was reversed, I am sure dad would have rather had a rifle that shot reliably, so that brings me back to the original question, what would be the best chambering for a “short action” Remington 700 ADL in 6mm/243?

I'd do a 6mm Creed and call it a day. It'll fit in the action well and you'll still have a 6mm.

I came across a similar situation, except that it wasn't my dad's rifle.
In my case the rifle was an M722 Remington in .257 Roberts.
Over the course of time, I had put in a longer magazine, but it was still not right. I wanted a 6mm, if nothing else.
Finally, I came across a donor-rifle that things a lot easier. The donor is an LA, so I rebarrelled the SA to .243 Winchester, and the LA became a 6mm Remington.
Both barrels have tighter-than-normal twists, for the use of longer(heavier) bullets.
I much prefer Improved cases, but my dies were for factory chambers, so I went with factory chambers, with lengthened throats.
I would recommend, therefor, looking into the Creed, unless you already have dies.
Same goes for the 6mm. I used one for a while, and usually use an improved case if I rebarrel. I wouldn't Improve if I'd already bought a rifle.
Have fun,
Gene

6mm For me...bu then I am a 6mm Rem fan... I have 243s, which I like, but it is just a tool... otherwise I like the 6mm Rem being an upgrade in my book...

The round is best at home in a Long Action tho... I have a 6mm Rem on an ADL/ LA, with a 24 inch stainless barrel, heavy magnum contour, and with a 1 in 7 twist....

kinda like the concept behind a Creedmoor...

in a long action, It rivals a 240 Weatherby.... in a short action, the 243 rivals the 6mm Remington...

46 grains of RL 19, send 115 grain Berger bullets out the barrel at 3250 fps...bullets are seated long, magazine length

Scrub the crap out of it with a bore brush and use a good bore cleaner with a copper cleaner. I have had nasty bores that I thought were hopeless come out a lot cleaner than I thought after a few good cleaning sessions. Elbow grease and the right cleaning utensils can work wonders. Also, bores don't have to look like a chrome bumper on the inside to shoot good. I had a nice early 70s 6mm 700 BDL and sold it....I've kicked myself ever since....the 6mm Rem is a fine round...... It might just be me, but I couldn't change much on a rifle my Dad had unless it was totally scrapped.
