I am thinking about buying either a Remington XCR in .300 Win. Mag. or a Ruger Hawkeye in the same caliber. Any help will be appreciated. The Remington is roughly $300.00 more. Thanks for the help.

I don't know much about the Ruger Hawkeye, but I really like my Remington XCR. Mine is a .270 with a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40. [/img]

For just getting it wet and drying it off at the end of the day, the Ruger stainless model will do fine, but if you are going to hunt wor a week or so in rain and wet snow from a tent or a boat, or around salt water, like in Labrador or Alaska, the 700 XCR is WAY more corrosion resistant - impervious everwhere that it is coated.
Internally, Remington tells me the XCR has a better trigger than the older BDL SS, which had carbon steel trigger group that was the weak link for really nasty environments.

I have the MKII in 7MAG but if you have the extra 300 bones to throw around then why not get the Remmy? The rugged XCR will get you in and out of any element so why not?

Both are quality rifles, period...........The fit and finish on the Ruger wont be quite as good as the Remington, and the XCR trigger can be adjusted to be better than Rugers new LC6 trigger, The LC6 isnt a bad trigger (its a big improvement over the old M77MkII trigger) but its non-adjustable. The XCR has Remingtons new Trinyte finish. The new finish makes it more corrosion resistant. (although with reasonable care the Ruger wouldnt rust either) Its Like you said the XCR is 300 bucks higher, I dont think the XCR is 300 bucks better than the Hawkeye. If your looking for "BANG FOR THE BUCK" go Ruger. In my opinion theres not a better buy in a centerfire rifle on the market. Its all in what you want. Go to a gun shop thats got both and pick em up side by side, then decide for yourself if the XCR is worth the extra $300.00......Good luck.......................547.

I looked at both yesterday, in a shop. Of course, I haven't had the opportunity to shoot either one of them though. I have a Remington 700 270 now, and it is a fine rifle. I have also owned several Ruger rifles before in the past. Based on gut reaction to what I saw yesterday, I would definitely go with the Remington XCR over the new Ruger Hawkeye. The Hawkeye action was a bit rougher than the XCR. The XCR just seemed like it was a better, well-built package. I think the Hawkeye was lighter though. The stock on the XCR seemed like it was higher quality. The metal work on the XCR has a somewhat odd yellowish tint to it, due to that treatment they put on it. Not bad by any means; just slightly different than the slivery look of most stainless rifles out there. Go Remington on this comparison...

I like the feel of the XCR over the Hawkeye in a quick comparison at Bass Pro shop. I am looking at this or a Weatherby SMOA Vanguard. The Remington would sure seem to have the edge in ruggedness/durability.
