Just got off the phone with Ruger CS. The rep was very confused and didn't seem to realize the original M77s didn't come with today's integral rings. After asking around the shop, she said I should call Weaver, as they used to provide the bases. Have a message in with them.
Does anyone know if a tang safety, long action Ruger M77 (pre-integral rings) accepts long action Remington 700 weaver bases? Or if not, what would fit on it now? It's got the 4 taps in the receiver, but I don't have any Remingtons to compare them to.
Thanks!

The original Ruger M77s had the same integral mount system that they use today. A few years after introduction, they offered the "round top" for those that didn't like Ruger's rings. The Ruger round tops use Remington M700 bases.

Thanks -- it's a roundtop. Much appreciated. I was under the impression that the original release offered a choice (integral or round) but if not, I stand corrected!

Happily so! -- Rem 700 bases are way easier and cheaper than alternatives. (For what it's worth, I gave the CS tech the serial and she offered a photo, but she spent 10 minutes insisting it had integral mounts. I guess its only fair that we both learned something 😂)

Unfortunately, due to Covid most "customer service" people are working from home and have no access to any more info than you do by looking at the manufacturer's website. I called Burris awhile back and the guy that I got couldn't tell me where one of their new scope models are made.

Ya know, the 77r was a hell of a bargain for a set it up & depend on it forever rifle. And Ruger eventually went to that system exclusively. But the discontinued ST=smooth top, was the versatility that's in today. No crystal ball, but a 77ST might be better now, if it had the same mounting platform as a 700 Remington.
Just musing over a decade or 3 of collective changes in the market.

Just musing over a decade or 3 of collective changes in the market. The stock cleaned up nice. They used respectable wood. And the bluing has held up remarkably for a 45 year old rifle that was clearly used to hunt. I just wish someone had thought the grip cap and medallion thing through better!
