I was watching a documentary on vietnam and the vietnamese soldiers sad that is how they knew American soldiers were in the area, they could smell the cigarette smoke well before they ever heard them. They'd know to ambush them because of the smell

That’s funny. I knew where the dinks were in the morning by the smell of their cooking fires.
I am..........disturbed.

They'd know to ambush them because of the smell that was a good opportunity to set up tobacco smoke and ambush them.

I'd say 400 yards. Skiing on a calm day, then WHIFF, skied a bit more and there was a group of smokers. Right, you're at altitude, skiing is work, and you're puffing already!

I smelled my idiot friend's smoke once when he set up his stand within 200 yards of mine. He is an idiot because he knew where I was and thought he was farther. It aggravated me off and on a few times that day smelling his cigarette smoke.

Altitude never bothered me when I was younger and smoked. I smoked on all my Sierra Treks, crossing passes over 11K', and smoke all the way up and at the top of Mt Rainier. Was even PO'd the guys I went with made me get out of the igloo during a white out to smoke. Now, I can't stand it much, except on the odd occasion of getting a whiff in traffic and decide a smoke would be nice, something to take the edge off being stuck with a bunch of a-holes.

Sometimes, when the wind is right, the smell of their body and laundry soap hits me before the cigarette smoke.
Dressed in full camo, skunk pee on their mink oiled Muck boots, maybe wearing a carbon layer undersuit, it makes sense for them to shower with Irish Spring in the morning.

An older guy at our gun club would come out to the range with his big ol' stogie stuck in his mouth, smoldering away. I hated to get a bench downwind of him, dang things stunk so bad they'd run a maggot off a gutwagon. He died of lung cancer a few years ago, too bad, he was a nice old guy except for the stogies.

DD Did it whistle after that? Better out on the blade than in the cockpit!
I remember walking up to a spot and nothing to strong fish smell in just a few steps . . . was SCARY, still is to this day! Have always wondered if they were still there and well hidden, just wanting us to go away.
So many things I would do differently today!

Old boss smoked cheap cigars. We honestly could smell his cigar before you could see his truck coming down the street.

Burn marks from the air friction? 16foot radius * 2pi* how many RPM? Sucker mustard been hot when you landed...

Can smell it when deer hunting, house on edge of property. 200 yards in we have a stand. Can also smell when they run dryer sheets. I can smell stuff when others cant. Pretty heightened sense.
As a result, gasoline and cat piss are like bullets to my brain.
