It seems as we grow older some of the misconceptions of our younger days of rifles and hunting become more obvious. Can you name a thing or two you learned as you've gotten older and wiser? Something perhaps you wish you would have known from the get-go?

The main thing I've learned, is that a well placed shot on game significantly changes your list of 'acceptable chamberings' for hunting any specific animal ... it makes for a lot larger selection ...

pursuant to that, I've learned that having/carrying a quality rifle that fits you well and functions proplery/reliably is much more important that what chambering you're carrying ...

1. When you get a rig that shoots well, keep it.

2. Get a shooting teacher/mentor ( someone that's a helluva better rifleman than you are )

3. Practice

4. Share what you have learned

Some of the good points I can't really claim to have 'learned over the years', because I read about them and 'accepted' them early on. However, I will note one thing that I have 'learned' is that an extra pound or two in a rifle actually weighs ALOT more than it sounds like it does after a long day of hunting.

....1.Skinny barrels,(on best quality built rifles) shoot as accurately as the heavy barreled varmint models for the first couple shots....2.ONE SHOT is all that is needed on big game if placed well.3. A best built Remington 700 bolt gun is VERY tough to top so far as consistently producing extreme accuracy.4. Controlled feed bolt guns are indeed the most reliable functioning bolt guns. 5.The best built controlled feed designs (Winchester,Mauser)can be extremely accurate rifles too (just not as consistently working out that way as rifles built on the 700 design).6. Once in awhile a fellow can find a lever or pump rifle that will shoot like a bolt gun--HANG ON TO IT! 7. Auto loaders are generally finicky with accuracy, loads, feeding, clea ning and can make a woman look like a settled personality.(a HK model 270 auto-loading .22 RF is the only auto-loader i've ever owned that disputes all that!)

1. That skinny barrels shoot accurately as heavy barreled varmint models, for MANY shots.

I've learned that all of the worthwhile cartridges out there were developed 50+ years ago. While some of these new rounds are interesting for their novelty factor, they tend to fall by the wayside as some sort of gimmick.

you have to be in really good shape to hump the mountains for deer carrying a 12 pound rifle, and 50 pound backsack...

Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

When your ship comes in. ... make sure you are willing to unload it.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.
