Extremely isolated SE Oregon. Government. BLM, USFS, NRCS, Schools, Highway dept (ODT), USF&W, ARS and a Univ Exp Station, Or Dept Fish and Wildlife, and County and City gov, State and local police. Place would turn into a ghost town without gov $$$. Cattle ranching and some alfalfa growers in the outback.
Historically, it was lumber.

3 colleges in our county, one large one. Few big plants (Merck, Coors beer, few big printing plants)
Rest farming (Beef, dairy and crops) and poultry/poultry processing (George’s, Pilgrims pride, Perdue, cargill) Real Estate and Construction is booming as well. Lots of .gov jobs. And Tourism (big ski resort, water park, Shenandoah nat’l park)

I've done a little checking and it looks like if it wasn't for federal money our parish would be destitute. My wife is an RN NP at our biggest pediatric clinic and 70% of the patients receive absolutely free medical care. Our parish seat and second largest community look like a native reservation, just darker. We live out in the boondocks or I would get the heck out. The white folks are about 55% of the Parish population. A lot higher white ratio out here.
