Any of the Minnesota boys hunting the early antlerless season this weekend? Gonna be hunting in the 604 Chronic Wasting Zone. Looking forward to getting out the old Savage and hopefully freezer training a couple slicks.

We were thinking of trying to whack a doe for the youth season coming up tomorrow. We still have a pile of stuff to do in WI for the season there. We decided to hit the range instead tomorrow for the day. I need to get some shooting out to 400 if possible. I put a new scope on the .280. Leupold VX3i, 3.5-10 CDS. This will be my first crack with turning dials. I've looked over a few different ballistics tables to at least get some sort of starting point.

I also have a .243 that will get some time. That has a Burris Fullfield II scope on it with their BDS system. I have shot that to 400, which isn't easy with my crappy eyesight.

Jack would rather go on a little grouse hunting trip than shoot deer in October since he's not chased birds yet this year either. We'll chase them around a bit at some point this weekend.

Hi guys. I have not been posting anything lately but I've finally been able to join in the hunting a little this fall. My camera has seen at least 4 nice bucks but I cannot seem to locate them personally. Nothing new there.
Dave the camp looks great & those new blinds will make sitting all day way to easy. Great work.
I decided I needed a blind & a heater this year so I converted an old horse trailer into a deer blind. It has been sitting behind my barn for more than 25 years with no floor in it. A new floor, windows and insulation, not so instant, portable deer blind. I have it parked on a slight hill overlooking a spot where I took a 10 point late in the gun season last year.
I have decided to rest my Remington pump this season & go retro. I have a 1951 era Savage lever action in 300 Savage I want to try. I bought it used and mounted a similar era Weaver scope on it. It has a very worn leather sling from a previous owner. It was used and that shows a little but it likes Superformance SST's so I just have to take it back out hunting. I wish I knew it's history.
Do any of you have experience with the 300 Savage? It seems like an ideal deer caliber but I've never used it before.
I look forward to the annual camp story Dave, good luck this year.

Jim,

That 300 sav is a cool caliber. It should be similar to the .308. I have used one but never did get to shoot anything with it.

Jim-I've hunted with a 300 Savage for over 30 years. What questions do you have about the best deer round and rifle ever made?

Jim I've used a 99 in a .300 for over 25 years and in Maine she punches holes in the thick brush better than most calibers.her down range performance is as good as a 308.The 99 is very accurate and reliable..

What bullets are you guys using in your 300 Savages? I have a beater with a peep sight that I finally got sighted in last weekend and plan on using it this year for still hunting.. I loaded up some 130 grain bullets for plinking but need to get a better bullet for hunting.

I've loaded with the Hornady #30303 150 SST300 Savage (Hornady designed it specifically for the 300 Savage), Speer 150 FN, Speer 150 RN, Nosler 150 Partiions and Remington 150 Core-lokt. The Hornady #30303 and the Speer 150 RN shot the best groups (1" and 1.25") in my 1946 Savage Model 99EG. Those Speer 150s are short enough that they don't seat below the base of the short 0.220" neck of the 300 Savage. Any of these will do fine with whitetails. This year I'm taking this 1956 99F 300 Savage the stand.

My plan this year is a Rem 722 in 300 savage. I have a good load with 165 gr. corlokts and R-15. I did use it about 15 years ago with 150 Hornady ILs and took a nice buck.

I don't have any particular questions about the gun or the caliber. Since this is mostly about deer hunting I was hoping some of you might be using one. Clearly you are. No surprise, it is a great gun to carry, balances like the other lever actions and the caliber seems like it's about ideal. Plenty of power but not to much. I'm guessing just about any bullet in the 150 - 180gn weight class will do the job.
Hopefully I can report on how it works in a few weeks.

Jim-one of our members here worked up a real good load for me. Miles58 reached out to me regarding my 99 and ended up working up a lazer accurate load for me. It's loaded with Varget powder and the 130 gr. Barnes TTSX bullet. Very accurate, and very manageable recoi. You may want to consider reaching out to him, or if you want the specifics on this load, PM me and I'll go get the recipe and sent it to you.

I picked up an E in .243 which will be going to my granddaughter. I'm gonna bleed it, and then pass it off to my son so he can do the same before Esther is old enough to hunt. When Esther joins us at our camp in Pennsylvania, she will be the first member of the 4th generation of our family to hunt out of the camp. The camp was built in 1950.

I always used to run the old Remington 180 gr. RN's, but they don't make them any more.

Her and her brother ran right up to me as soon as I got out of the car. If the owners weren’t keeping him we’d have 2.
