Anybody used these bullets in a 6mm Remington (or 243) on Whitetail?
I have a Mauser that I'm pretty sure it is 1 in 8 twist but won't shoot 100 or 95 grain bullets worth a darn. I had some 68 grain match bullets and it grouped well. I was given half a box of 85 grain Speers and would like to know any direct experience out there. thanks

Are you confusing Sierra and Speer?

Sample of one, but my son used an 85 grain Speer BTSP to neck shoot one whitetail doe at about 50 yards. Bang flop as you might imagine. He was using my dad's 243 and ammunition that I had loaded for him.

If I were hunting with a 6mm Remington or a 243 Winchester this fall, and shooting an 85 grain Speer BTSP out of it, I would aim for the neck or the armpit, and would make sure I had a sharp knife handy.

And if I decided to substitute the 85 grain Sierra BTHP Gameking in either of those cases, I would duplicate my efforts for the neck or armpit, and likewise keep a sharp knife handy for the processing of groceries.

Personally I feel that kind of shooting is what the 243/6MM were designed for. Meat rifles.

I haven't used them on whitetails but I have run them for years as a groundhog load. Wonderfully accurate in my Ruger tanger. I just looked at the Speer website, they do list them as "rapid expansion, ideal for white tail deer and antelope".

I shot a few pigs with them years ago. But I shot a lot more with the Speer 90gn SP and the Hornady 87gn SP.

Used them in a 243 on Texas Hill Country does (read small) back in the 80s. They worked fine on lung shots. Never tried through the shoulders. Would pick something else for a trophy hunt.

I have used the 85 and 90 grain Speers in a .243 and from my experience they are fairly tough construction for cup and core. I don't think you will see any issue with vital hits whether heart/lungs or shoulder hits.

I prefer the 85g speer btsp instead of the Sierra 85g bthp, speer is tougher and you get better penetration.
R#19 with a Win primer in win case will be your friend in either the 243 win or the 6 Remington, accuracy in either will be 3300fps + .

Not to Dispute anyone else's experience with them....
I've shot them a lot out of 243s for years... very accurate bullet and always cheap and also available.. a great combo...
Some won't consider this a negative but I do...
shot a good sized buck with one, out of a 243... load was for short range shooting, under 200 yrds... load was 30 grains of 4198.. Rifle was a Ruger 77... distance was like 40 yds.....
Dropped the deer on the spot...asked the butchers to save the bullet if found when processing..
they found it, and all I can say, there wasn't much of it...maybe a smashed up 20 to 30 grains...
I'll admit, I'd like to see more bullet remaining, than just that...
I have a 6mm Rem, with a fast twist... I can rocket one of these bullets out of it at 3500 to 3600 fps ...
I can envision that bullet blowing up when hitting an animal at high velocity....you'd either have a bad blood shot deer, or a shallow wound, and then be gone.....For my last recovery of the bullet, at high velocity it working would be a heads of tales coin toss situation... at least in my personal opinion for my use...I think the 90 grain Speer might be a better choice...or slow down the velocity, to am MV under 2700 fps at the Muzzle...
Sorry if my experience differs from other folks...just passing on the experience, and will let others decide their own conclusions..

I shot a big bodied mule with a 85 hpbt Sierra out of my 6BR pistol at @200 yards. It only ran 75 yards.

Ive shot about 4 boxes on our little 45lb roe deer. They work great from a 20" 243. Ive shot about 5 75lb deer. They worked but I thought they were a bit marginal - a big buck on the point of the shoulder and I wonder.
I like expansion and am not into weight retention etc but I think a 90 or 95gr ballistic tip works better
