The dining room table in our home growing up was built by my dad and two older brothers before I was born. My wife loved it from the first time she saw it so dad and I built one about a year after we got married.

That was 18 years ago. My wife’s grandmother lives on the same farm in the same house that her late husband built back in the 60s and loves the table we have.

So this summer she mentioned how much she likes the benches we made and always wanted a big farmhouse table to go in the kitchen overlooking the front pasture.

Challenge accepted!

Got to buy some new toys (Pocket Hole kit). Always love a good excuse to buy new tools. I consider myself a bit of an amateur carpenter (very amateur) and with wood prices being what they are, I called a friend that is the complete opposite of amateur. Professional cabinet maker, he ordered some red oak planks for me with an order of his, saving me about $120 over Lowes.

Bench completed and sanded (Pine and Birch - not oak):

Legs bracketed and marked for 1x3 Red Oak apron and pocket holes:

Apron in place:

1x8 Outer Frame mitred and screwed in place:

Inside pieces in place and ready for finish sanding:

First coat of Minwax PolyShades Mission Oak is on! Sand with 1000 Grit tomorrow and a 2nd coat should do it!

Thanks Jim. I’m beginning to see why stuff like this is so expensive. The man hours alone is closing in on 50-60. Taking my time so I don’t screw it up bad!

Thanks all for the compliments. Hopefully Mamaw has a merry Christmas! After tomorrow I’m gonna put the sander down and pick up a brew!

Awesome job. Been on my bucket list for a while.

My buddy bought a farm and was going to burn the decrepit barn down. Told me to come get all the lumber I wanted. Now my shop is filled with 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, and 1x6 to 1x12, all true dimensional, 100 year old oak. Goal is to build a farmhouse table and “skip plane” to get it mostly smooth, but still show some of the old saw marks.
