I have an obvious sporterized Mauser. Full length stock, 30/06 caliber. Just open sights no holes drilled for scope mount. bcd/ar on the top front of the action. Below that has number 42. mod. 99 on side of action. Serial # 8554 Can anyone shed some light on this rifle.

Should say mod.98 on the side. Dual code, manufactured by Gustloff in Weimar and assembled at the Mauser plant in Borsigwalde. 42 is the year of production. Started out as a standard K98k before it was sported.

I don't always shoot Mausers, but when I do...I prefer VZ-24s.
When you speak of "quality", certainly a definitional term of differing contexts. "Quality" in terms of mechanical function, of safety, of metallurgy, of fitment, of originality as built; nowadays quality as including potential for restoration! I concur that if you want expert opinions/advice, you need photos. If you're pinging off quality of receiver and/or barrel by nomenclature alone, likely a mistake in terms of expectations. Receivers are like Christmas trees. "hangers" for sub-components. The complete action is no better than the components which constitute the functioning unit. I'm no military mauser expert, but the point here, "quality" in what sense; to what purpose. Such concept applicable to about every type of widget.
Below my "perfect quality" purposed... truck gun! "BSW 37" manufacture & all matching! Great quality action & here, action all matching! Works well & receiver sight great for old eyes! My take. Best & stay safe!
I also have a Turkish 98 Mauser 1936 I believe and by quality perceived or otherwise i would assume the desirability and perceived quality of a German made Mauser would be considered more desirable than a Turkish made Mauser. Plus the German Mauser was $750 and the Turkish about half that. It's like talking to my uncle (he has a PHD in child psychology)
As I said, you have a wartime production German Mauser 98 action. They were well made, though, being wartime, the finish is less refined than say a pre-war example.
In some respects, ISKRA is correct in that the rifle is the sum of its parts and they should all work in unison. However, no matter how good those parts, if you attach them to a substandard action, you end up with a substandard rifle. In this regard, I disagree with his statement, "The complete action is no better than the components which constitute the functioning unit."
As issued, yours is a good action to build on. Hopefully the smith used good parts, and understood feeding, etc.
Take pics, email them to yourself, then upload them to one of many picture hosting sites. Once hosted, they will provide a link that you can copy and paste into your reply to provide pics. A full stocked .30-06, one of my favorites! I'm sure others would love t see it as well.
Photobucket lost me as a customer when they held my pics for ransom. Wish I could help. I use Imgur now which is easier. There are other sites too that some say are even easier.
Anyway, I'll be looking forward to seeing pics when you do. Got one Full Stock '06, a Husqvarna and am working on finishing another in my spare time. This one being a real compact model built on a VZ 24 action.
