And if i take the 264 rem should i rebarrel its got a ssbarrel and go to a 26inch barrel ?Ithink the rem is 1968 model.

Hmmmm, can you do both? Ok, if not, part of this depends on what year the Winnie is.. If pre-64, go that way.. I'm betting it's post '64.. If so, I'd take the Rem.

Shoot it first and see if you like what it does as-is.. If it's not doing well enough for your satisfaction rebarrel to .264WM w/26" barrel..

Others will disagree but I love that particular round.

What Redneck said. If it's a pre-64 Winchester, I'd take that one in a heartbeat.

Choose the bullet weight and distance you want to shoot. From the ballistic tables, look up the velocity at that distance for each bullet. Multiply the velocity at that distance by the bullet weight and divide by 7000. The caliber with the biggest number wins, always.

The SS barreled rem's from the 60's are a neat find. I've shot a handful of them and they were all quite accurate, I didn't ever chrono any of them though. I'd shoot and chrono that SS factory barrel before re-barreling, might not be necessary.

I have an early 70's M700 in 264 WM. It was my first centerfire rifle (my dad bought it for me at 14 for a Colorado deer hunt). I like it a lot.

It is a bit of a "specialty" round though. Excellent at what it's intended for (medium game at long range), but not the best suited (or maybe I should say others are "better" suited) for a lot of more "normal" hunting.

If your just gonna cut it up anyway it doesn't really matter. If it were me, I would pick the one in the best condition, wear, dings, etc. (It's not easy coming across 1960's models in really good condition, for a decent price anyway) If it's pre-64 grab it, especially if it's nice. As for caliber, 7RM all the way!

I ain't no authority on pre-64 Model 70's, but I'm pretty sure Winchester never made any in the 7mmRM. The 7mmRM was introduced by Remington in 1962, along with the 700 rifle, I believe. The Model 70 wasn't chambered in the 7mmRM until the post-64 (actually post-63) models came out. The early post-64 Model 70's were not considered too desirable, but I suppose the push-feed action would work all right to be rebarreled and restocked.

Thus, I would take the old 700 in 264, over the post-64 Model 70. smile

I'd take the Remington in .264 Winny. Ammo won't be nearly as readily available as 7mm Mag, but if you handload that shouldn't be a problem. If not, I'd still take the 264. I just think it's a neat, underestimated, and misunderstood caliber. Plus, I just prefer Remmy's to Winchesters.

If you're concerned about factory loads, 7mm remmy is the one. I didn't make the choice , I bought both cals. I do reload though
