Any coating or surface that was so fragile it would be damaged by dish soap is not going to hold up in field use. I think the danger in washing lenses lies solely with the possibility of grit being rubbed against the lenses. Use proper cloths, make sure the surface is well rinsed and don't rub away like your're sanding a chunk of wood and you should be fine.
This is how I wash my glasses every day. The lenses stay in excellent shape for years.
Thinking on it....I hunted in the rain the other day and now snow today....That acid rain that got on it most likely ruined it right off....in addition to voiding the warranty...Then again it started off looking really sharp.....
I figured you were astute enough to use some Blue tape to cover those lens before the shot
Blue....now there is a blast from the past....😀
Today: No rain, no snow, no TP on the lens...I may get a whole Deer season out of it at this rate. Weather tomorrow is for sun shine. Damn UV rays may ruin it yet. Guess I’ll have to hunt with my back to the sun all day. Heathen that I am, I don’t have scope caps....Screw the wind, saving the lens is more important than getting a Deer....
I do, but also like the 6x42's. Earlier in the week I even took the Charmin to a 6x42 Schmidt and Bender....While it may be scandalous to the extreme... to some...it was raining hard and I could almost hear that acid rain grinding away the coatings....fortunately it still is crystal sharp....
Thank's and I will gladly accept the good luck wishes.....Right now all I have been crossing paths with are Does.....Still fun, so not that huge of a downer..
I am glad yall had some fun with this. The opinion of Zeiss according to two of their service people on different occasions is that Dawn voids the warranty. My experience mirrors that of most here. Flushing with water and cleaning with dish soap keeps lenses like new.
I thought it ridiculous but then again there are hydrophobic coatings nowadays and perhaps things might have changed. Hard to believe though.
Living in a world of G17s and 700s, wishing for P7s and 202s
Cleaned some scope lenses with water and dawn and lens brush this weekend like I have been doing for many years and they just as pretty as they were when they were new.
I once read advice from a pro photographer. He said he only uses soft cotton T-shirts and a fog from his breath for cleaning. He also said always after blowing or brushing away anything first.
What you wipe it with is more critical than what you put on the scope. I have not had a problem but the roughest thing I will use is toilet paper or a T-Shirt. I buy the wet lens cloth in a little package in bulk and put them in all my packs and bino cases. I blow or brush the lense off and use these then I seldom need the soap or other cleaner. The photography brush and bulb jobs are nice to carry or have in camp. You won't ruin a lens with these.

Just make sure your test NEGATIVE for Covid-19 before breathing on that lens. If not, you're scope may soon be coughing and loose it's sense of smell and taste.
