Since we are coming up on Christmas I guess we can allow ourselves the liberty to fill out our wish list a little more. What would you build if you were to make a custom 99? This subject has come up several times over the last few months and has drawn a considerable amount of interest. So what would it be. A fully modern gun based on a wildcat cartridge or a replica of one of the historic offerings but with a personal twist. Or anything else in between. What would you build?

By the way, at one time I thought it would be interesting building up a 99E in 308 by havng it hard chromed and fitted out with synthetic stocks and a good low mounted low power fixed or compact variable scope. Kind of the go anywhere 99.

A .32-40 on a takedown frame. Octagon barrel because, well, I never beheld such a beast. It would be the perfect companion for the .32-40 Winchester High Wall target rifle I'm in the middle of building. Kind of what a curmudgeonly target shooter of 100+ years ago would've built to hunt with- a guy firmly rooted in the previous century!

I would build a 35 Rem EG. Oh wait...I already built it.

I have the parts for a 450 Bushmaster sitting here ready to go to a smith. Late 99C action with a 284 magazine and a Savage octagon barrel from an early rifle that'll need to be cut, re-threaded, rebored, chambered, rust blued, and stocked. I should note that the barrel has *no value as an "original", so nothing is lost by modifying it. The "303 Savage" marking on the barrel is near the receiver and will be cut off with the re-threading so it'll make a cool custom with all the old Savage barrel markings but no x'd out cartridge stamp. I'll get it before next falls hunts.
Currently assembling a 250-3000 takedown carbine with a featherweight barrel and an additional .410 barrel. Waiting on a couple pins and a safety spring from our friend Lightfoot. Since the original front sight had been cut off I needed to cut a dovetail for a new front sight, which I did yesterday. Also yesterday I steamed the buttstock and squeezed the cheeks in a tad with a clamp to get a tighter fit to the action. I'll let it dry and see if it worked. If I have time this winter it'll get a carry case and a reblue after a function test. Very tight little carbine set up that should be a great camp gun.
Need to check a 30-30 pistol grip takedown I built last year for headspace then have it rust blued and checkered.
Repaired my friend John's blown up 99R 300 Savage and am nearing completion. Internals repaired and stock glued together and recheckered. A little sanding then a refinish on the buttstock to match the forearm and it'll be good to go. It was his favorite rifle so it's got to be perfect for him. Might refinish both stocks just to be sure they match perfectly.

Keep 'em going, FB! (As for x-ing out the caliber stamp, try milling it out with a shallowly applied end mill, and then stamping the new caliber designation in that space.)

[ I have a late 40's 99 in 250 well used, with extra holes and fuzzy barrel. I think I would build a 22-250 with medium weight barrel for a truck gun.

I would like to find a nice 22HP, 250-3000, 300 Sav, 32-40, 30-30 or even a 38-55 in beautiful condition and have a custom highly figured Mannlicher Stock made for it.

I'd think about having a 99F in 308 rebored/rechambered to 338 FED as a companion to my 99F in 260.

Would be neat and a fun shooter for a 99 chambered in .223 Remington, but that would be a lot of work, $$$$, and not realistic to do. So guess it just remains a neat never to be fun gun.

Not a 99 but never the less on my bulletin board is the 1921 filing of a patent by C. A. Nelson for a take-down Savage Model 1920.
I'd like a cased matching pair in 250-3000 and 300 Savage with 22 and 24 inch barrels respectively. Don't want to bore you all with the details, however I will continue dreaming...

Savage 99 in 450 Bushmaster. I have all of the parts, just need to get the barrel installed.
I shot 4 deer this year with the 450 Bushmaster in a custom Mauser, all DRT, this cartridge makes me smile.
A short, quick handling Savage 99 in 450 would be my perfect rifle.

Got a milling machine? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h52vH0tTBGAYou too could be the first kid on the block to have a scaled down 99. I'll take mine in 44-mag thank you.

I'm currently trying to secure a 303 octagon barreled receiver from a member here ideally I'd like to turn it into a 38-55 20" or shorter carbine ( love the 38-55s ). Need to check on the feasibility of that happening and the rotor and stop for it.

Don/Loggah very graciously helped me understand the relieving needed on the 303 rotor to make it function with the 38-55 cartridge and it worked perfectly.
