Seems that back when I was in, GMs were distinguished between Gunners Mate Guns and Gunners Mate Missiles. Maybe at some point there were Gunners Mate Armorers as well.

Some of you actually got it right. Rating is your job specialty ( like Gunners Mate), rate is your paygrade (like E-1, E-2, thru E-9), Rank is military authority level ( like Petty Officer 3rd class, thru Master Chief Petty Officer).
