I have a pre 64 M70 LA and it does not have the forearm screw.

My question is, will it shoot without this? I have been told this
needs to be here. TIA.

Hi Deans,

Don't know if you remember me but I bought some of your 165gr. Speer bullets. I have my M70s set up with the screw removed, so the barrel is floating. Except one, my 270. I've given several away but should have a couple. If I do you can have one. Do you have the escution that dovetails into the barrel? If I don't have any I'am sure you can find one on ebay. Shoot it I bet it will be just fine.

With standard-grade pre-64 Model 70s, I have found that accuracy is best and can be fine-tuned to a gilt edge if you have that forend screw in place.

You can get a reproduction replacement screw, brand-new and of the highest quality, identical to an original Winchester unit, from Wisner's:

www.wisnersinc.com

They list it as "forearm stud screw" (part # 7870) and the price is $3.25

Thanks Pete and Allen. I am going to shoot it as is and see what
it does and make changes as needed.

Pete I remember. How are you doing? Knew you were down for the count for awhile. Hope all is well now.

Allen, thanks for the link and the info.

Don't let the missing screw spoil your fun for now. If it shoots well as it is then leave it be. Mine shoot best with the screw loose so, except for looks, there might as well be nothing in there.

True a M70 might group better with the screw tuned but mine stay sighted in better with it loose. Just one of those variables.

Leave the middle guard screw on the loose side and don't over tighten the rear screw unless it shoots better that way.

All guns should be locked up when not in use!
