I am considering purchasing a BLR in 284W, but there is no magazine with it. Before I buy it I would like to locate a magazine, or how to make one work for it.

A few points -

1) I think it is unlikely you will find a BLR magazine marked 284 win as the owners of them likely do not have spares as there were not many 284 win BLRs made.

2) I have an 30-06 BLR and I am able to feed 284 win rounds out of the magazine just fine - obviously they don't chamber. A 30-06 magazine is going to have the same geometry as a 308 win magazine, so I suspect any 308/7-mm08/358 win magazine will work. Just tried this for 5 minutes ago.

3) I have a Tikka 7mm-08 and I can feed 284 win rounds out of its detachable box magazine.

4) I have a Rem 700 with after market bottom metal detachable box and I can feed 284 wins out of it.

Summary - detachable box magazines are pretty forgiving with respect to feeding and if there is a problem you can either bend or Dremel the upper edges of the magazine lip to adjust feeding. I suspect any of the 308 winchester based magazines will work without any problems.

If you get a 308 winchester mag, you will be limited to 3 down instead of 4 but I don't see that as any impediment in the real world.

Update* I reached out the teach64, he had a spare he was willing to part with, at this point I had not seen the rifle, but figured at the price he was asking I would take a chance. Made the deal and the magazine was enroute on 12/2. Touched base with the gun shop, custom hours only due to covid, got down there and looked it over. It is in pretty good shape, not mint, but not bad at all. It also had a VXIIc 3-9 mounted. $640 out the door. So now wait for the mag...and wait...and wait. teach was even offering to send me his only spare! I had faith the original would eventually make it. The Christmas miracle of 2020...it showed up today, 12/26 just 24 days later, it fits, holds shells and cycles. Thanks teach64, he is a stand-up guy!! I now have one of my bucket list rifles...complete!
