I recently bought a CVA hunter in 45/70 bc it was stupid cheap and I already had a good supply of brass, bullets, and powder from my previous lever action. I took her to the range to break/sight in with some loads and couldn't get anything to write home about at 100 yds. My loads are Starline brass, CCI LR, acme 405s, and Nosler 300 BT all using H4198. at 50 yds it was doing around 1.5-2 inches then at 100, we're looking at 5" plus. Does anyone have one of these rifles who'd care to throw some mild but consistently accurate loads my way?

thanks in advance

300 grain bullet and starting load of H110 (yeah I know, that is what I thought too) in the Hornady Volume1 Manual gave me 1565 fps and STELLAR accuracy in 16" Contender.
Mild shooting too!
In that light rifle, I think mild load will be the word too.

As someone at the range said years ago discussing loads for his Handi Rifle . . .

'Ya run out of shoulder long before you run out of strength in the rifle's action.'

405 home cast water quenched bullets with 25 gr of AA5744 works real well in my H&R Buffalo Classic. Also worked well in my Marlin 1895. I also liked RL7 and IMR4198.
